Generic Host Process/msvcrt.dll error
 
Hello, forgive me if this has been solved already -- i did searches but did not see my specific dll mentioned.

I recently started getting the "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close." The error signature is:

szAppName: svchost.exe
szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180
szModName: msvcrt.dll
szModVer: 7.0.2600.2180
offset: 000367ef

The problems I am seeing include:
1) "There are no active mixer devices available..." when I try to adjust volume. (system sounds still work; cannot play music files)

2) I'm manually going to the Windows Update site and checking for latest updates (I have always had the automatic option on), but it just hangs on the "Checking for latest updates" page and the progress bar keeps going, but nothing is ever returned.

3) If I go and examine the services, many services that are configured to startup "automatically" are not started (including Windows Audio which I guess explains my active mixer message).

I use Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 as my security suite, and scans (virus and spyware) does not turn up much except cookies, which I have told it to remove. I will try Ad-aware next...

FYI, here is my AVG Anti-spyware log. All items have been quarantined. Upon reboot the error still occurs, though. :sad: Please let me know what else to try! I'm hoping that I will not have to re-install the OS.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

If you have your XP install CD, please do the following;
Go to Start | Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit the ok button. You will not see much happen, but you should know when it's done. Reboot then.

Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system.

Post back if you needed updates and the results of the sfc /scannow.

First, thanks so much for responding.

I ran the scannow -- nothing displayed when it finished, so I rebooted. All looked fine for a couple of minutes, and I checked that all the normal services started automatically, but then the Generic Host Process error (same dll) appeared again. And, as it always does, it proceeded to promptly shut down many of the services, including Automatic Updates, DHCP Client, etc. I then tried to go to the windowsupdate site and check for updates, but, as before, it still hangs at the checking stage.

If you have other suggestions I'd be more than happy to try them.

Try downloading the file from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...s.shtml?msvcrt and place it into the C:\windows\system32 folder. Hopefully that will do it.

It's been about 24 hours now since I've replaced the dll, and I have not seen error messages, automatic updates work, and all seems well. THANK YOU! It's a great service that you and others are doing for the user community.

I am curious though...can you tell if a virus had caused this? I always have up-to-date antivirus software on, and I don't download that much from the internet. If it was a virus, what else should I be doing to prevent this type of infection in the future?

It is possible that a virus caused it, but it could also just be a corrupt file.
Here are a few tips;

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.
  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

I have exactly the same problem as LULU2K. But, replacing msvcrt.dll from dll-files.com don't solve my problem. When I replace file in directory SYSTEM32, software (previously dumps error message) works, but after restarting PC msvdrt.dll is overwritten with original file from directory DLLCACHE. When I copy msvcrt.dll also to the directory DLLCACHE, Windows notify me, that file is not OK ("Insert original CD"..blabla). After forced restart, windows don't start. I must copy original file to system directory via system console. After that, windows starts.
I tryied copy original file from original XP CD, but files on CD and System32 are the same (I compared them by content). Can you help me?
P.S. I use legal Windows XP Home SP2 with all updates, NOD32 with all updates, Ad Aware SE, Spybot, Spyware doctor. As browser I use Opera.
