Cannot find server or DNS error
 
I keep getting the "Cannot find server or DNS error" on IE6 only on certain sites, e.g. www.mcafee.com, www.hertz.com and other sites that use encryption I assume. I tried the Microsoft fixes, adjusting SSL, TLS, etc.., anti-virus programs, spybot, adaware, but no luck. Tried to empty my "temporary internet files", but strangely cannot. Switched to mozilla/firefox and netscape, but those have a "unable to connect" message for the same sites. Here is a log of my Hijackthis, please help!

It could be that your hosts file is messed up. Some virus or something might have changed it.

Open up c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in Notepad. Make sure the only line in there says:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Close it, save the file, and then see if you can't access those sites. I'm not even going to make any suggestions on your HJT log, as editing your hosts file may do the trick for your situation.

Get rid of any firewalls you have if the problem continues, remove all of them, totaly uninstall, i cannot tell you how many times people have "destryoed their internet access" when they have setup firewalls improperly.

Thanks so much, needed lots of help. There were like 200 spyware sounding names under the local host. Probably all Kazaa related! :twisted: Erased them all and now it works! What software do you recommend in the future to prevent this, besides avoiding kazaa of course! Was this spyware related?

I had that exact problem with Paypal. There is a way to fix it. It's called PageFix and it's free to try software from fixIEonline.com. Give it a shot, it worked for me. PageFix
