How to identify running programs

Where is a utility that identifies running programs?

When one presses ctrl-alt-del a list of running programs comes up.
Most of the listings are difficult to identify.
I would like to keep my old machine as lean and clean as possible.
If I can identify unneccessary programs I can stop them from running etc.

Somewhere, in passing, I saw mentioned a utility that will identify most of the items in the ctrl-alt-del window.

Other suggestions/hints enthusiastically welcomed.

I've used (with good success) the google technique. Drop the name of the program in google, and look for a sight that tells what it does. You may come across a few sites built for that.

Google is definitely the best utility you have available ;)
