I was formatting a brand new hard drive the other day and my computer froze up so I just shut it off. Now the new hard drive is not being detected in BIOS or in Windows. When I go into the BIOS setting and try to auto detect the hard drive, it window pops up that says "Auto Detecting Hard Drives..." I let the computer do its thing for about 10 hours and the window never went away and the hard drive was not detected. What should I do to fix this?

Hello hope you can help!,

Well i have a SD card (sandisk SDHC card 4GBs ) and i use it to take phots with my digital camera.

The SD card worked fine on both pc and camera in the past
But yesterday when i took it out of the camera to load the photos onto my pc, windows gave me the following error : "Please insert a card into drive I"

The card cannot be opened from the pc but in the camera it works fine
Can you please help me find a way to save my photos because i have some really important photos in it.

BIOS won't come up on newly built system

I just built my own computer system using a Biostar MCP6P M2+ motherboard and an Athlon 1.8 GHz processor, I followed the instructions in the quick setup guide and the manual which i downloaded but the system will not boot into the BIOS, in addition the power light does not come on and the hard drive light comes on and remains lit. The hard drive is a Seagate Baracuda 250 Gig SATA. Any help with this problem will be appreciated.

I realize this sounds like a repeated question, but so far 2 days of searching the web has gotten me no solutions to my problem.

First, the equipment I do and do not have.

NEW WD SATA-II HDD to replace a dead IDE drive.
Asus P4s800d-e deluxe mobo
DVD/CD burner
Floppy is owned but I don't have the SATA drivers on floppy disc, nor do I have a way to get them on it since the computer (desktop) that uses it is currently deceased.
Also, I have the XP Install disc, XP SP1 upgrade disc and XP SP2 upgrade disc, ASUS Vista recovery disc and finally Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade disc (family pack).

The problem is that I can get my BIOS to see the new drive but as we all know, the XP installer won't recognize it until I install the correct SATA driver from floppy...etc. I can't do the floppy thing, sadly. So, any advice, help, assistance...anything will be greatly appreciated.

One thing I wondered is if I can format the drive somehow, will the XP install work? The ultimate goal here is to get this machine up on Windows 7 with my family pack.

Trouble with disc drive?

Evening all,

I've seen a number of cases recently where the disc drive ceases to function (mainly in laptops for some reason), usually evident by the icon no longer being displayed within My Computer.

Seems to be when someone either updates or installs a Symantec (mostly Norton 360) product.

To resolve it?

Open up the Windows Registry Editor:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
>SYSTEM
>>CurrentControlSet
>>>Control
>>>>Class

Select the entry entitled: (May be easier to look for the 965, usually this entry is about tenth from the top)
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

If you open up this entry you'll see an item named 'Upper Filters'; if you select and delete this then restart you machine. Quite often you may see an item named 'LowerFilters' - this should also be deleted if you have it.

Once you have deleted both (if you have both) and restarted, you should find that your drive works as per normal.

Laptop Hardrive swap from IDE to SATA

Basically I am wondering if there is a hardware adapter available that will allow me to install a SATA drive into a laptop that. is set up for IDE.
I have a Dell 1150, that has an adapater (feed thru) that is required to install standard IDE drives. So the question, is there and adapter to fit SATA drive to match up to the 40 pin IDE connector inside the laptop. I'm not really concerned about performance..I just don't want to buy another IDE hard drive is I can use one of my spare SATA drives.

I have been facing this problem for quite sometime. I can see the drive on Disk Management but not on “Mycomputer”. On Disk management the drive States "UNALLOCATED". I've tried everything possible but to no avail. I actually have some 120 GB of data in it and a little skeptical to do any kind of formatting of changes. I don't wanna or can't lose any data from the drive at any cost. I have XP as my operating system.

Anything that you can suggest!!.

Formatting write-protected DVD

I do not know what to say but I bought a HP laptop some years ago that is accompanied with HP (Hewlett-Packard) recovery DVDs which is for Vista recovery. However, I am moving away from vista and no longer needs the recovery DVD. I am thinking of formatting the write-protected DVD but I cannot. I tried use command line and go to D drive to change the attributes of the DVD.

The command line is attrib -s -h -r *.*/s.

It did not work initially and I change it to:

D:\>attrib -s -h -r /s

It shows a list of files with Access denied in front of the file. Something like this:

Access denied - D:\boo.mgr

Is there any ways to format that unwanted Hewlett-Packard recovery DVD??

How should I package hard drive to bring to shop?

I bought a Seagate 7200.11 SD15A Firmware 500GBhard drive last December. Just today when I turned on the PC it got bricked i.e BIOS cannot detect it, for no reason and hangs at boot when I turn on autodetection of drives.

I am guessing it is the dreaded BSY bug which still plagues people today.

There is a firmware update fix however, but first I need to make the drive accessible via BIOS, the methods currently out there however, might be too risky and I still have my warranty.

Now my question is, since I lost my original antistatic bag, what can I substitute for it so that I can safely carry this harddrive to shop since it still has warranty?

Right now, I am using my old 80GB WD hard drive. I don't know if I will ever buy from Seagate again.

I also would also like to know your opinion on what is a good hd brand I can rely on, for my future purchase, esp. in the 1.5TB or more range.

Weird partition issue – what do you think?

Hello All,

I’ve got a new Samsung NP-NC10 with NoteBook that had XP installed. I replaced it with Vista Ultimate, only to crash it as won’t accept Vista. So, I reinstalled XP and system drivers from the Reload discs. The NoteBook then functioned correctly. However, the C: Drive was renamed (not by me) to E: Drive, and partitioned into 2 parts. One is NTFS and very small, containing the OS. The other is Healthy (Unknown Partition) 143.04 GB. No File System is stated.

I then ran Norton Partition Magic 8.0, to try to change the Unknown partition to NTFS and merge the 2 partitions. However, Partition Magic would not recognize the E: Drive Letter (E: ) and now the NoteBook loads the Unknown Partition at start-up and will not operate beyond a black screen with one line of meaningless characters at the top. I have tried booting from the CD Drive and a USB, but it will only boot from the Unknown Partition in the E: Drive.

As a last resort, I want to run Norton Government Wipe from a CD to try to wipe the entire hard drive and start again. I have no data on there that is irreplaceable. However, it won’t boot from anything except the Unknown Partition.

I want to write System files in window CE Compact flash card so that it
boots from CF flash. The files are
1.Configuration file: bootcepc.cnf
2. Boot logo .pcx file: bootcepc.pcx
3. Kernel Image file (nk.bin)

To write i have just copied file's by copy and paste in Flash but it doesn't
work and i am getting error like "Boot failure" . I heard about a utility
named (makeCFUtility) used to write in Flash. But i don't know how to
download this utility.

Is there is any other way to write system files in Flash card.

I am using Advantech single board (PCM-3370 F) with 128 MB RAM . The OS used

My PC Hangs whenever i insert a CD or DVD on my LG DVD writer and when i restarts PC it take very long time. For this I have to remove the SATA cables of hardisk and reinsert them. After this my PC behaves normally but problem starts whenever I insert any disk.
My previous DVD writer was also giving same problems so i replace it in warranty but the new one is also same.
My PC vendor told me to format the PC. Is this a right solution

I used a cracker for a program, and my computer restarted itself. When it came back on, it wouldn't play any Aveyond games, coming up with the code 'Error! Code LP5. Failed to unpack the program. Contact the author' or something to that effect. I contacted the author. No help. I have had no luck with anything - anti virus software, uninstalling and reinstalling applications (Aveyond isn't the only thing affected. Anything new I introduce either thinks it is corrupted, or comes up with the code, and these programs work perfectly well on another computer). Redownloading the installtion files doesn't help. System restore didn't help. Reinstalling the whole OS didn't help.

I have a friend who says it seems to be a virus that messed up with the hardware. If anyone can help... please do.

Possible Near Death HDD?

Well, the Cavier HDD in my sig is acting funny. Last night I loaded about 30 gigs of data to it, not that much (its still over 60 percent free). So today I turned on my computer and was using files on it, and all of a sudden it made Windows Explorer stop responding. I thought that was wierd, and had to restart the computer. Well when it started back up the hard drive was working fine, mind you it hasn't been making any noises or anything like a normal HDD that is dieing would. I opened my computer about 30 minutes later noticed that that disk wasn't showing up. I restarted the computer, and the drive was working again, but then about 10 minutes later it just "shut off", if doesn't actually shutoff I can hear it running, but it just stops working with Windows. I read a chkdsk but it said there were no errors at all. I tried to defragment but it doesn't stay on long enough to finish. So do you guys this it's dieing? If so I'll buy a new one tonight.

EDIT- And how can I back up data to another HDD if everytime I try it freezes?

Hard Disk CRC Problems

Hey,

Whenever I try to boot windows 7, it bluescreens with stop 0xED (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE). I installed the drive in my xp machine and whenever I try to access it I get a "disk is not formatted" error. When I try to access it in command prompt, I get this message:

chkdsk /f runs fine and picks up no errors.... I can still browse the filesystem in testdisk and copy over files. none of them seem to be corrupted.
Windows won't read it. Linux won't read it. Mac won't read it. The files are still there, its just that some part of the patition information is corrupted.

I am not prepared to run chkdsk /r as I'm not willing to rish any data loss...

Anyone know how to fix it?

Blinking cursor upon boot

I have been having trouble upon bootup of my XP running desktop. Lately (past month), if there is any removable storage device plugged in (ie memory card plugged into the port on the printer, cd in the disc tray, etc) the OS will not load. It just sits there will a black screen and a blinking cursor. Now if I remove the CD or the memory card it boots up fine, but it has NEVER done this before this past month. Is this an issue with the bios, a virus, or a hardware issue?

hello guys!
need help with this..
I have 2 SATA Hard disk.. Seagate 160GB (C:) & 500GB (D:)
all of a sudden when i open my pc.. an error message popped up in the BIOS.
"Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"....
im very clueless of what happened so i started checking the data and power cables of both HDD. run it again but same thing happened. I tried everything i can.. switched the cables.. switched anything that i can switch.. i even put the data cable of C: into SATA 2 slot and D: into SATA 1 slot.. wheww.. but same error happened..
but when i unplugged the 500GB (D:) my pc starts running! my pc cant detect my back-up drive (D:).. im a 3d artist and i saved all my years of work on that drive. its like a heartbreak if i cant recover those files. Can anyone tell me what happened? Pls. help me...
any suggestions, tips or advices are well appreciated..

Most deduplication products have been designed and sold as combined software/hardware solutions. In most cases the hardware alone has been difficult to justify because of its high cost. External HDD keeps turning on and then off repeatedly

Recently I plugged my Western Digital external hdd into my computer and it will keep turning off and then the lights will come back on and it will spin for about 7 seconds and then do the same thing over and over again.. I contacted WD with no help really except to find out my warrenty is up and can't get a new one. But anyways I think it is a problem with the SATA to USB/Power Supply Converter but I don't know for sure, that's just my guess. Any ideas or help would be great.

External disc seen as local

Hello everyone!
I've really big problem with my external disc. I have two of them (Transcend StoreJet 25M, one of them is mine and other is my father's), same size, bought at the same time.
Last nigh my dad reinstalled Windows Vista on his Toshiba laptop, and did a stupid thing, he partitioned discs with his Transcend plugged in. Since then his external Transcend disc is read as local hard drive. Later he plugged my Transcend into his laptop (several time) and same thing happened. The problem is that discs are shown as local, on both his and mine laptops and our PC, and we cannot read any data, computer stops responding if you try to access discs.
I can see it in Device Manager under Disc Drives label, but cannot access data, cannot safely remove it, nothing.
Both discs are full with very important data and I really don't know what to do, please help!

Need help installing a SATA hard drive

I have a new computer arriving soon with a 640GB SATA hard drive running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, I want to move my other 250GB SATA hard drive running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit from my dead computer to the new computer to transfer data.

My question is after I install the old hard drive to the new computer, how do I set the old drive as the slave and the new one as the master? If I turn on the computer and go straight to windows, would it automatically set each of them to master and slave, and would it cause problems if I don't boot from one of them and just let it choose by itself? Would both drive appear on My Computer so that I can drag and transfer files?

cd reader not working

I have a Dell about 5 years old.os is xp,the cd reader is not responding.Under device manager there is a yellow exclamation point.the computor says I have the correct drivers installed.I bought a new reader and the same problem exsists.I swapped ide cable connections on the motherboard with the hard drive with no luck.I than purchased a new ide cable and that did not change anything. The unit has power, the lights will flash and door open. When I put the new reader in the computer it noted a new piece of hardware was installed and it said it had properly found the correct drivers and under device management it listed the correct name of the unit.Primary and secondary ide says they are operating properly.I not a computer wiz but I like to try and figure it out with out having to take it to a repair shop.

Master Boot Record (MBR) and Partition Lost After Power Failure

I have a 1TB Maxtor Basics external hard drive. After a power cut, I lost access to the entire data in it; I couldn't see the drive in my computer but the system was slowing down and getting stuck about every 10 seconds periodically. First I tried running CHKDSK.EXE, but it didn't work, it gave the error message "Cannot open volume for direct access.". This message is given when you try to fix a non-existing drive. Soon I came to a conclusion that the partition table and/or master boot record could be damaged.

I installed one of those partition recovery software, "Active@ Partition Recovery 5.3". After a little analysis I saw that I was right. The master boot record was damaged. I read the documentation and FAQ of that program which suggest to fix master boot record first in this kind of situations. I did so, and fixed the MBR. After that, I saw that the previously existing partition was gone, and it is said to be "Unallocated Partition", (i.e; there is no partition apparent). Unfortunately that software had no partition recovery feature, so I had to do something else.

Next I installed "Paragon Partition Manager 10.0". It gave the exact same report as the previous tool did (the MBR was okay (since I recovered it by the previous tool) and the partition was "unallocated"). But, there happened to be a bigger problem. When the program tries to access this damaged harddisk, it gives a read-write error message every 5 seconds. A popup dialog box appears and informs about the R/W failure. There are three buttons on this dialog: Retry, Ignore and Cancel. If you click retry, popups appear forever, so I clicked "Ignore" for 30 or 40 times (it takes 40 x (5 sec) = 3 minutes of tedious work) before doing any harddisk operation (getting harddisk report, etc; even while starting the software). I tried recovering the partition, so it started to scan the harddisk. The bad thing is that there wasn't any end to those popups during the scan, I clicked them for half an hour and the progress-bar didn't even color up! So I gave up using this software too.

Now I need some advice and instructions from you to recover my harddisk.
1) Do I lose my harddisk contents if I create a new partition (and then use an unerase/file-recovery tool)? Or should I find and install another partition recovery software? Which one is the best solution for my problem?
2) What software do you suggest for such a situation?

I will purchase a UPS soon...
Any help or suggestion will be super greatly appreciated.

okay. i have a flash drive, and i keep most of my stuff on it. very recently, though, i went to my computer and plugged it in. usually, an icon appears on the desktop when i do that, but it wasn't there. so i looked at the equivalent of my computer, and it showed a 'USB Drive'.
i try to open it, but i get 'Unable to mount location'. i try a windows computer. there, it's like it doesn't even exist. i can't defrag it, and i look at the properties, 'File System:unknown' i also have a deadline, which is halloween, this year, so get back to me soon please?

Dell Optiplex GX150 has stopped reading any hard disks

Our normally dependable Dell Optiplex GX150 will not turn on properly. It now gives these messages when I turn it on:
Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
Primary hard disk drive 1 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found

This is followed by two beeps and a message:
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the set up utility.

I have tried changing the hard drives with some other ones I know to be OK, and the computer still will not detect any hard drives.

Installing 2nd hard drive big dramas

Ok so what ive done was back up all my files that i want to keep on a second hard drive so i could install another windows. all worked fine, installed windows everything working fine until i go to put the other hard drive in thats got all my stuff on it. when i go to start up i only get the motherboard screen and the computer doesnt boot and wont let me go into setup. if i press delete quick enough after restarting it says loading setup but just stays at that. So when i take the drive it back out usualy it boots ok except it now takes a LOT longer to go from the motherboard screen to win xp loading. If anyone can help me i will call you lots of nice names. Formated hd not seen

After formatting four times, a Maxtor diamondmax 9 6Y080MO using
MSI-PM8M2-V motherboard with a celeron D 2.93, the hard drive is not recgonized to reinstall XP home. What can be done for Windows to see the HD.

Here's another problem: I have two 6Y080MO HD's. I have one running on a MSI-6178LM motherboard with 850Plll. I went to swap to the above MSI-PM8M2-V motherboard. I received a page to start windows normally...I tried numerous ways to get it to work the motherboard would not accept the HD. Is there a way to swap HD's from one computer to another?
After going through that I put the HD back and now it's making some noise...I'm thinking it's damaged now!

My intentions where to take the HD from MSI-6178LM which has all my vital info on...to the other system to have two 80gb HD in the same computer.

Dead Hard Drive

A couple of days ago, my hard drive completely died. I didn't back up my work files, and would like to get them back. Is there any way I can get them back?

The hard drive is absoluetely unrecognized. The SATA cables are in perfectly but the hard drive is unrecognized. If I remove the hard drive (which had Windows Media Center installed) or if I leave it in, the message is the same, which is "please insert boot media" or something like that.

My friend suggested I place linux in the disc drive and try to get the files of there, because linux can run live without any hard drive, but the computer won't recognize the hard drive.

Mozy Back-Up Crashed my computer

I installed MOZY FREE Backup software on my computer by following their instructions.
After installation, my computer kept freezing and then I got the Windows Blue Screen of Death!
Basically, MOZY FREE Backup CRASHED my computer. I could not even do a system restore. I had to restore my computer from scratch. I am still in the process of putting back all my programs and files, this is very time consuming.
Furthermore, after I backed up my files, I could not retrieve them using another computer. It kept telling me that I had to register and install MOZY Backup, it just would not retrieve my previous registration.
I am still not able to retrieve my files. Luckily, I kept local backups on some DVD's. MOZY may be free, but there is always a catch. Please be aware Mozy free backup could crash your computer?
Maybe that's how they get you; then they tell you have to purchase one of their plans???
FYI: I have 2GB of RAM and a 2.0 GHz AMD processor and it still CRASHED it!

my usb flash drive is ot being recognized by laptop and it says 0 bytes

My usb key is not being recognized by my laptop. When I plug it in it says insert disk - also it is indicating that there are 0 bytes. Can anyone give me a solution for retreiving my data?

Delayed Write Failure

I've googled around the internet and have found many solutions to a Delayed Write Failure to my 1TB external Western Digital Hard Drive. So far nothing has worked. The drive is still accessible and can still transfer files. It's only when I try putting larger files on it, that it gives me the error. I have tried using Max128k, but that doesn't even seem to filter anything.

I have a 160Gb Hitachi hard disk.
I have tried formatting it from both MyComputer and Device Manager.
In both the cases, it goes till 99% and throws error saying that "Windows was unable to complete the format".
Can any1 help me with the problem?

SATA HDD not detected in Asrock P4V88

i just bought a new samsung 320gb 3.0gb/s HDD. unfortunately, i didn't know that my MB only supported SATA-I. i connected the HDD to 2nd sata(primary) slot, turned on my computer, but when i checked my bios it said that it didn't detect any hard drive. so i placed the jumper so that it would run in the 1.5gb/s mode, but it still wasn't detected. i've been trying to look for an answer to my problem for the past few days, but i still can't find anything. can someone please help me? thank you!

ok the issue is that the 500GB SATA hard drive is not listed in the bios.

I have verified that the drive is in fact a good drive by installing it into a different computer.

now according to the motherboard details under SATA: it list

VIA VT8237 SATA RAID (RAID 0, 1)
Up to 2 SATA devices

does this mean that this board only uses SATA for RAID

my intention is to have this drive as the primary drive with windows installed on it.
