I have one very dead fan in my computer, which is why I have an external one that keeps the machine cool. I also have SpeedFan, which measures the temperatures of both the harddrive and the CPU. I'm wondering if there's a magic number that the harddrive shouldn't go over (I'm worried about overheating, and I should be - I've cooked two harddrives with the fan not working properly)
We're talking about a laptop here, so I don't know if it's different from a desktop. I've read that 45 degrees C is the most you want to try, but also that standard harddrives are rated for up to 55 degrees C.
Any other advice? I am looking at replacing the actual fan in the laptop itself, but I don't know what I'll do yet...

Hi there,

I have a strange problem with my machine at work.
Suddenly, it has stopped detecting all the USB storage devices attached to usb ports.
As I figured it out, according to my new company policy ;-), admins blocked them from registry via group policy settings and by disabling the removable storage service.
I undo the changes and now I can access my previous usb disks, which I used successfully on this machine before.

But, when I connect a new Western Digital disk, it does not detect it as a USB Mass storage device and instead detects it as "External HDD" and asks for drivers, which is wrong.
In short, the machine is now not accepting any new USB storage devices as usb disks :-(
I strongly suspect that this is a part of USB group policy applied to the machine as the same disk is working perfectly on the machine which is not in the work domain.

I tried giving exclusive rights to usb related files in Windows\inf folder, but in vain.
Could not find anything about this problem on internet.

Please help me in this case.
Thanks in advance.

Ok, this is a strange one...

Was running the Fedora 9 live cd, and deleted some stuff off my desktop in Vista. I also was getting ready to play a movie (all my movies are stored on my external drive) while the Fedora installer ran on the Live Cd. The installer crashed, and when I logged back into Vista, I cannot access my external drive. In fact when I go into control panel > computer, my external drive isn't even listed. I can only see it in Device Manager and Disk Manager. In those programs, Vista reports that everything is fine with the external drive and it is working properly.

To give more details, the external drive has three partitions on it. First one is an ext3 partiton I created to install Linux on. Second partition is the Linux swap file. The third partition is an NTFS that I have my movies, pictures, documents, etc on. I use this as a shared partition for Vista and Linux. Disk Manager shows that the first two partitions are active and healthy, but for the third partition (the one I need to access), it only lists the partition size, but no status or health reports.

To make things more confusing (or hopefully easier), in the Event Log, it says that some registry entries are being used by another program. What I think may have happened is this-

When the Linux Live CD crashed during install and I still had the external drive open, I had to hit the reset button on my computer, since the system froze. Perhaps because of that, Vista thinks that Linux is still using the partition?
So I tried booting up the Live Cd again, opened and closed the partition in the external drive, then rebooted into Vista, but that didn't solve the problem.

Not sure what to do now, the movies and stuff I can replace, but I have some very important files that I cannot afford to lose, and not to mention irreplaceable pictures of my family. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you..

*Edit- Forgot to mention that when I boot into the Linux Live CD, I can access the partition, it is only in Vista that I am having this problem.

I own a HP system, I don't usually buy brand name systems but this system had all that I required.

It came with a 500gig HD (Sata) and preinstalled Vista Premium and no backup disks. The harddrive has a factory recovery partition, unfortunately to recover my system using this partion also requires re-installing all the trial software the system came with.

I've downloaded all the chipset drivers pertaining to my machine and burnt them to a cd.

Among the chipset drivers is my Serial ATA Controller Driver. I'm purchasing Vista Ultimate not the upgrade. I want to format and install Ultimate thus also getting rid of the trial software.

The installation will be on my Sata harddrive C: I'm assuming that 'll be asked to press F6 to load any third party drivers. I'm also assuming that if I don't install my Serial ATA Controller Driver at this point then the installation might fail... Am I right in this assumption?

I'm new to Sata but with the help so far you've given me I'm beginning to understand, thankyou. I'm not new to installing systems but I am, to Vista and Sata.

I recently had a start up problem with my Dell XPS 410 which I purchased in March 2007 and has a 250 GB Samsung SP2504C hard drive. I have partitioned the drive so my data is on one partion and the software on the primary partition. Fact is I started my machine one day and no program including the PC Cillin antivirus will work. I decided to restart it and then it failed to start.

I went to the advanced boot options by pressing F8 at start up time and choose "last known good configuration" this too did not work so I decided to repair with the installation CD, this too failed and so I decided to reinstall the operating system. This too failed so next time I went to the prompt from the inside the set up process and issued the fomat c: command. This worked all the way till it asked me to key in a label for the drive. After I did that, it reported "Format failed" I repeated this several times but to no avail.

In the bios, I realised that the systems recognises the SAMSUNG hard drive but reports that there is no SATA hard drive present.
I run windows Vista.

Now I used the DISKPART.EXE utitlity to clean out the whole disk and that came out successful and then in the same utility I formatted the whole disk which too was successfull. However, when I returned to the CMD prompt after restartin gthe machine to install a OS (VISTA) it starting at the stage where it is copying files and returns with the following mesage " Windows could not reinitiliaze the deployment engine". I then went back to the prompt to format the disk it finished and ask me to key in a label for the volume which I did. it started with building the file system structures and then reported that format failed.

I am wondering what to do to be able to bring the system back.

Any help? Suggestions?
