Im very much into real-time graphics using OpenGL, specifically to create 'Virtual Heitage' applications. These applications feature models and environments with close to millions of polygons. At the moment i use my laptop and a rather slow desktop for testing which, as you can imagine, is far from ideal. I've been eyeing up these SGI workstations recently (eg. Octane 2, Indigo, 02 etc), and i know that these are used by university teams, who make similar graphical visualisations, that these are the thing to use.

But i'm confused. They must be good, but when i look at the specs they don't seem particularly powerfull when compared to a brand new PC with , and some seem to be behind concerning OpenGL implementations (although i expect parts can be upgraded).

So are these actually as good as they are supposed to be for running graphical visualisations, and are they worth the investment ?

Hi all, I hope you are well. I am very new to Ubuntu and I am experiencing occasional screen flickers (the monitor will go black for a split second, then resume as normal). Now, I have tried googling for a solution but I have not found one yet that satisfies the issue. As you can imagine, its rather headache inducing. My system is a Toshiba satellite pro p100 PSPAE notebook. I have an nVidia Geforce go 7600 and I have installed the Nvidia server setting utility and have driver 180.44. My distro is Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) GNOME 2.26.1.
Things I have tried to do to rectify the flicker include : DISABLING "Force full GPU scaling". I also tried specifying a refresh rate of 60mhz resolution = 1440*900. Although everytime I apply this, the X utility reverts my preference here back to AUTO (only with the refresh rate and resolution: it remembers the disabled "Force full GPU scaling". Sorry about the long post, I am just trying to provide as much information as possible. Thanks for your time and I hope we can sort this together as it is giving my eyes some trouble!!

Hi all

I was messing around on my laptop which running WattOS, which is a remaster of Ubuntu in case you haven’t heard of it.
I plugged in my usb stick and I wanted to format it and I used GParted and I noticed in the list there was ext3 so I thought i would give it a try I normally use Fat-something.

I formatted the stick but then upon trying to mount it within PCMan file manager I get "Unable to mount device: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked" I unplugged and replugged the Stick but same thing, and then I formatted as fat32 but still nothing.

I decided to plug it into my windows machine and it came up "Do you wish to format etc". I allowed it to and then i could open it in windows fine but back to Linux and same old thing "Unable to mount device: The enclosing drive for the volume is locked".

I can mount the drive manually and unmount it manually and create files on it via the shell but graphically i cannot mount, unmount or create any files or drag and drop onto it. I just tried another USB stick and same problem and I havent formatted or played with the other one.

Can anyone help me please?

Many thanks
