I have turned off ntpd so it won't interfere with my settings.. I set the time zone to America/Los_Angeles and the time is 5 hours behind what it should be. I have scp'd a "Los_Angeles" file over from a machine that displays the right time and sym linked to it from /etc/localtime and no change. I have installed system-config-date and used it to set the timezone to Los_Angeles with no change. When I run ntpdate sync.server. it gives me an offset number that is exactly 5 hours off and then later fails because the time is further off than 1000 seconds from the real time.

I heard about VMware Player that allows XP to be run as well as Linux and other OSs simultaneously. I have a need to be able to install RedHat Fedora on this machine too so I'd like to find out if I can:
1. Save the existing XP environment
2. Install a virtual computing environment (like VMware or something else?)
3. Install redhat fedora and actually get it working (what are the chances? will I suffer substantial pain trying to get it running?)
4. Be able to run the (previously existing) XP environment when I want to.
5. Have a computer that will run multiple OSs at will.

Is this possible?
If so, how Superman?

I am using kubuntu 8.0. In the init script "start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet -p $PID_FILE" used to stop a daemon. It is also specified at the top that PID_FILE="/var/run/daemon.pid".

I can start daemon, but when i try to stop, it is not stopping. Also no .pid file is generated in the location /var/run.

Can anybody please tell how does the daemon.pid file generate inside /var/run or it automatically generate the .pid file when daemon starts? Else anything we need to write for generate the pid file? If so where we going to wtite it? Is it in the init script? Please reply anyone have any idea about this.

But i'm not able to decide between xp and vista.
I would only use windows only if a certain work is simply not possible with suse (in a convenient way)
heard that vista consumes huge space .... right.(should i allow it only for my little usage of windows?)
At present i have only a dummy os on my laptop.

Could you suggest the process to install them (or please post a link which explains the same).

To stop a network we use
/etc/init.d/networking stop - I can ping after stopping.(so it is not working.)

Also anybody know how to replaced the gateway. I used the "route add" command but it is adding it to the table, what i want is replaced the old gateway with new one.

I've tried to install Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04-- both with no success.
I keep getting a message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot medium in selected boot device and press any key...
My computer's setup reads as follows:
Primary master--not detected
Primary slave --not detected
3rd master--Hitachi HD
3rd slave---not detected
4th master not detected
4th slave-- optiarc DVD

My questions: is this configuration amenable to setting up an operaating system from the CD to the HD? What could be the reason for not being able to get ANYWHERE in the installation?
I've tried changing the configurations but all variations have been unsuccessful. Could the fault be in my Program discs? I dowloaded them from the Ubuntu site and think that it was done properly. Culd it be that my MoBo is not compatable with Linux (is there such a possibility?)
