MTS is High-definition MPEG Transport Stream video format, commonly called "AVCHD", used by Sony, Panasonic, and other HD camcorders and based on the MPEG-2 transport stream. MTS file supports 720p and 1080i HD video formats.
And AVCHD stands for "Advanced Video Codec High Definition". This format was jointly established by both Panasonic and Sony in 2006.

Helloo!

I have a .txt file with around 1000 lines in it - each line just has a number. What I want to do is to copy all 1000 lines and paste it into an excel sheet.

So, I went up to the first line, changed to visual mode, and used shift+g to select all lines. Then I used ctrl+insert to copy them and then I went to excel and pasted them - but, only 41 lines get pasted!! :(

Trouble using nohup with &

Hey!!

I'm trying to use the nohup command in background mode (i.e. with the '&' at the end.)

When I generally run the program, I use the command:
./xyz "argument 1" arg 2 arg 3 arg 4 > output.txt

This works fine. Even when I append nohup to it, i.e. type:
nohup ./xyz "argument 1" arg 2 arg 3 arg 4 > output.txt
it works fine. The file output.txt is created and contains the correct data.

However, when I add the '&' sign at the end, as in:
nohup ./xyz "argument 1" arg 2 arg 3 arg 4 > output.txt &
it doesn't work... I mean it shows me a PID, and when i run 'ps', it shows that the process is running... But after I kill the process and check output.txt, the file is empty!!! I even tried checking the file without killing the process first - that didn't help either... where am I going wrong??

nvidia settings not surviving reboot??

Hi all

Yesterday my resolution was changed and I tried to change it back but nvidia wouldn't list the resolution I wanted 1280x1024 so I removed the nvidia driver and re-installed it.
After that it worked, it listed the resolution i wanted, but then this morning I booted up and the resolution was 1152x864 so i entered

gksudo nvidia-settings

and changed my resolution back to 1280x1024 and clicked apply, then save to X configuration file, and it did. Upon reboot the setting were back at 1152x864 so I tried it again but every time I reboot the settings are lost. On Google I found some people having the same problem but clicking "save to X configuration file" does the job but in my case it doesn't.
I am using nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 180) [recommended]
Can anyone help me please?

Free means freedom to alter, redistribute, sell or release as a different product with no restrictions on you or your new distribution.

1. BLAG - Blag is an operating system. Blag has a suite of graphics, internet, audio, video, office, and peer to peer file sharing applications. Based on Fedora, Blag has just about everything you'd ever need for productivity and fun.

2. Dragora - Dragora is an independent distribution of GNU/linux based on the concept of the simplicity. It aims to be a multipurpose, stable and powerful operating system while maintaining the simplicity of Unix. The initial release of Dragora was June 13, 2008. Dragora GNU/Linux 1.1 was released October 8, 2009.

Sound card issue

I have dual boot system with Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu 9.10 on same HDD. There is and irritating issue with Creative Audigy SE where the card will work under one OS, but not on other (so either it work with XP and not Ubuntu, or vice-versa).
Any suggestions?

Hi,
I am a new user of Fedora. I should work with an open source package which works in Linux. Therefore, I installed Fedora 11. At the moment, I must install Apache Ant to continue. However, I am confused! I don’t know how. I appreciate if you tell me the details you know about installing it.

The other question is: What is the different between JDK, SE and J2SDK in Linux. The package said that I should set JAVA_HOME =/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04; however, I did not find that on my system. Is it possible to set it to (for example) /etc/java OR /etc/alternatives/…?

Hi everyone,

Every time I start my laptop, I must point to Places menu and mount the drive D: where contains my documents. D: and Linux partition are different. I want to mount automatically when the computer starts. How does that make such that?

And the other one is:

I must type a long command to change current directory, e.g:
$ cd /media/Programs/Study/Linux....
I want to make a script and place it in the user's folder. To go to the directory quickly, I need to run the script.

I always appreciate any solutions.

Setting crontab to pull database

I'm working in a location with a physical server, and the company I am working for is in a different location, and has a cloud server with a different address.

Database backups work using automysqlbackup script in the cloud server also. But the database backups that I want to pull from the cloud server is quite huge and cannot be exported to my local server using phpMyAdmin.

So can I use the scp command in the crontab to pull the backed up database daily into my local server? , i.e :

News Story It's On! Ubuntu and Microsoft Going to the Mat

Ubuntu's CEO, Mark Shuttleworth fired one over Microsoft's bow with a statement that the soon to be released Ubuntu 9.10 is ready to go head-to-head with Windows 7 on Netbooks. He also said that Windows XP is still hanging around on some Netbooks as a "ghost." Shuttleworth wants another shot at the U.S. market with his new Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu One offering. Ubuntu One is a file backup and sharing service where registered users receive 2GB of free storage and 50GB of storage for $10 per month.

I hope that works out for you Mark. I really do. Ubuntu is the ultimate Linux distribution built upon the best parent distribution (Debian) available today.

There's just one small catch: Not everything works yet.

That's actually a pretty big catch.

Windows has the best driver and application support. It also has the advantage of having the favorite corporate Kool-Aid taste. In other words, big companies like Windows because it's created and supported by one of the world's best companies: Microsoft. I know what you're thinking: "He's a traitor" or "He's being paid by Microsoft." I wish it were true that someone was paying me some big buckazoids to say these things but they aren't.

I love Linux. It's my favorite operating system. I use it and support it every single day of my life--and have for the past 14+ years. I have a full system dedicated to it and at least virtual machines running Linux various flavors. It has shortcomings for a user interface (formerly known as a Desktop) computer.

Linux is the best server operating system currently available. No question about it. On the user side, well, that's another story. Though I'm a big user of all Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, CentOS), I use it almost exclusively as a server operating system.

At one time, I used Linux as my primary desktop but I just can't do that any more and haven't for a long time. The reason? Mostly it's about ease of use and compatibility. Sure, I could use OpenOffice.org and remember to Save As all the time for everyone who uses MS products, I could forfeit my QuickBooks, I could use web-based apps for everything and I could just play Delta Force any more too. That last one would certainly make my wife happy. But I don't want to have to go to a lot of trouble just to use a computer.

I'm afraid Mr. Shuttleworth has his work cut out for him when trying to compete with Microsoft for user attention. It isn't likely to happen any time soon. There are too many issues and problems surrounding the use of Linux for a user's computer. One is peripherals and gadgets like phones, iTunes, printers and Netbooks.

Netbooks? Hey, that's what started this whole post. What's wrong with Ubuntu and Netbooks? Probably nothing, but for Mark Shuttleworth to assume Ubuntu 9.10 is going to compete favorably with Windows 7 on Netbooks, he must have something up his sleeve. I hope it's more than just a little magic or marketing hype because I've seen Windows 7 and it's good. Really good. I've also seen Ubuntu 9.10 and it's good too. Really good.

It should be an interesting showdown when both have had a chance to be Netbook-proven.

What do you think about the best operating system for Netbooks? Is Windows XP a ghost? Is Windows 7 all it's cracked up to be? Will Ubuntu 9.10 break in to the Netbook market in a big way?

One week would mean Monday to Saturday.

Thought you were bleeding edge with your quad-core PC? Think again. A company called Tilera today announced that it's working on a chip containing 100 processor cores, which it says could be seen by 2011. It's part of its new TILE-Gx line of 64-bit multi-core processors, the first of which--a 36-core chip--will be sampling by the end of 2010, the company said today in a statement. With its top-end TILE-Gx100, Tilera claims to outstrip Intel's next-generation Westmere processor in performance-per-watt by a factor of 10. Other models will contain 16 and 64 cores, and will sample in early 2011.

But all those cores won't do much good without applications to exercise them, right? So Tilera also offers Multicore Development Environment, a simplified multi-core Eclipse-based IDE that can target SMP Linux 2.6, Zero Overhead Linux, Bare Metal Environment and hybrid systems. The package includes an ANSI C/C++ compiler, system simulator, GNU command line tools and graphical multi-core application debugging and profiling.

The breakthroughs in multi-core technology are the result of an architecture under development since 1990. TILE-Gx chips share local cache across all cores, and a proprietary two-dimensional interconnect eliminates the need for an on-chip bus.

“We believe this next generation of high-core count, ultra high-performance chips will open completely new computing possibilities,” said Tilera CEO Omid Tahernia, a 21-year veteran of Motorola who joined Tilera in 2007 after running the DSP division of Xilinx. “Customers will be able to replace an entire board presently using a dozen or more chips with just one of our TILE-Gx processors, greatly simplifying the system architecture and resulting in reduced cost, power consumption, and PC board area. News Story Android Shmandroid, Who Cares?

It's a cell phone for crying out loud. Do you get it? A cell phone. You know, you make and receive phone calls on it. It's a telephone that you carry around in your pocket. Who gives a rip whether it's equipped with a web browser, a file editor or an ice cream dispenser; it's a telephone. People who care about the operating system or applet X on a cell phone are either under the age of 18 or don't have anything better to do with their time.

I don't really care that my cell phone uses some version of Microsoft Windows or Linux or Mac or OS2. I just don't care. As long as I can make and receive phone calls, I just don't care.

I apologize to all my faithful readers who want me to rail against the oppressive Microsoft and its crashy Windows operating system and champion our collective free software fight but when it comes to the operating system on my cell phone; I just don't care.

I remember a day when telephones, cell phones included, didn't have (or need) an operating system. We survived somehow without one. We survived without browsing the Internet on our telephones and we're still here alive and kicking to tell you about it. We also didn't need to 'text' anyone--especially while driving.
Do you want to know why we didn't need to text someone that, "we're bored?" We didn't need to. We had a telephone that dialed their number so that we could say in a loud, clear voice, "OMG, I'm sooooooo bored."

Yes, that's right, we actually spoke. With our voices. To each other. In some cases, we actually met face to face (f2f) with each other and some of us actually enjoyed it. I know that sounds crazy but we did it.

And social networking, that was hanging out together at the mall, clubs, scouts, school, or in (gasp) special interest groups.

Oh, far be it from me to suppress your non-creative, non-blinking idle chit-chat on Twitter, Facebook and the like but, and this is way off the hook (a term from old telephones that you picked up off the "hook"--oh never mind...), when we had an emotion, we didn't have to create a three-stroke winky face to show it, the other person could actually see and hear our emotion by looking at or listening to it.

Sorry, I digress.

So, why should I care that my cell phone has which operating system or any operating system at all? I don't. It could be Android, Shmandroid, KlaatuNix, CharlesMansonNix or even BalloonBoyNix for all I care. I just want to make and receive phone calls--reliably.

Cron job problems

Hi I've set my crontab as follows :

The script I'm using to function as a cron job is a database backup script, which is automysqlbackup .So by right my daily backups should be at 5.30 p.m in the evenings.

But I noticed that my database does not backup on Saturdays. It backs up on Sundays, but not Saturdays.
There is another default crontab scipt in the /etc directory :

I do not know why this should affect the backing up because I've not placed the automysqlbackup script in the cron.daily directory.

Why does the database not backup on Saturdays at all, but does backup on Sundays at 5.30 p.m?

Linux setup problem

Hello everybody.
I have a SIS-based dtk MiBook S52 laptop (SIS chipset, SIS ethernet, SIS vga ...)
I have tried to setup linux on it, but the installer hung up and I can't determine the problem
the distribution I tried are:
1- RedHat
2- open SUSE 10.2

ubuntu live cd:
the progressbar reaches the half then it stops for ever.

cron job not running for big time intervals

hi friends

well m facing a different sort of issue in my cron.
i hav set job like this

30 09 * * 1 /bin/backup14M
01 14 * * 1 /bin/backup14N
20 18 * * 1 /bin/backup14E

that is for every Monday at three different times.
but, first job executes well, later ones do not. I checked my scrip result at 14:05 hrs, and it was not executed, i change the job to 14:08 and it executed well at the specified time, then checked at 18:21 hrs for the output, again it didnt execute, and i changed the time to few more minutes and it executed at that time. All i noticed is, that if i change the time to few minutes, it executes, but it do not execute for big intervals.
Can anybody tell the problem and the respective solution

Mentionable:- I hav the checked the basic cron forums, so find my issue lil different from the mentioned.. Using centOS 5.3 system.

Flash videos won't play sound

Ok, so here goes, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it seemed closest to me. I recently set up a dual boot on my laptop to run XP and Ubuntu 9.04 (or some number relatively close) and I installed Flash player 9 because it wouldn't take 10 for some reason, and now when I watch videos, lets say on YouTube, the video itself plays fine, but there is no sound. I'm going to run the update manager as soon as I can get a chance too, to see if that'll fix the problem.

Any ideas will be much appreciated. Oh, and I am new to Linux OS's.

I have two hard disk in one compter. one is for windows xp and another linux. for windows xp i am getting internet.

when i started linux , it is saying device not found.

i am trying configure the lan card : sysconfig eth0 192.168.100.1
it is saying device not found.

i searced for linux drivers for lan card model for RTL8201CL to install drivers. but i could not get it.

can you tell me where to get these drivers and how to install drivers? after installation what are files to be configured.

Ethernet: Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
WLAN: Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card

I have installed "Sun VirtualBox" on my Vista Home Premium.
I have installed "openSUSE v11.1" using VirtualBox.

I cannot connect to the internet in LINUX.
The network settings on Virtual Box are as follows:

Network Adapter 1:
PCnet-FAST III (NAT)

SUSE detects only the ethernet port and identifies it as
79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE]
MAC: 08:00:27:b4:55:87
Device NAme: eth0
Started automatically at boot
IP address assigned using DHCP

How can I configure the settings in both Virtual Box and suse to connect to the internet. I am completely new to Linux so a little spoon-feeding will be appreciated.

I am kind of working backwards. I built a live site and then created a development site. Anyhow, the Dev site is built on ubuntu desktop. The site works fine.. INSERT INTO Exception
"Except I noticed that certain images weren't appearing. I discovered the site is case sensitive. This is not so with my host.

I have heard that case filters are a solution for my problem I'd like to know where I can attain one and if there is any particular preference for these solutions.

Hello,

We have a problem. We have a router which has, amongst others, ports 80 and 443 open. Both are pointing to one machine running apache2.

However, https on 443 works, but http on 80 doesn't.

nmap shows port 80 as filtered (why?), and port 443 as open.

I have stopped the firewall on the web server. I have made no changes to the apache2 config since installing it. Still no "It works" page!

Any help gratefully received!

My "10 Best Linux Distributions of 2009" list drew a bit of disdain from some of my readers, so I thought I'd make it up to them by posting a list of Linux distributions that they like to use. Since I have no way of knowing which of these distributions is better or worse than the others, I've place them in alphabetical order instead of any real ranking based on quality, community, development cycle or other criteria. I want to show you, faithful reader, that I do indeed read your comments and take your feedback seriously. You have a voice and I thank you for using it--this is your list--by you and for you.

Since I'm not familiar with some of the distributions on this list, most of the information is taken directly from the distribution's own website.

1. Arch Linux - Billed as a lightweight and flexible Linux distribution that tries to Keep It Simple. Arch Linux is an independently developed, i686/x86-64 general purpose GNU/Linux distribution versatile enough to suit any role. Development focuses on simplicity, minimalism, and code elegance. Arch is installed as a minimal base system, configured by the user upon which their own ideal environment is assembled by installing only what is required or desired for their unique purposes. GUI configuration utilities are not officially provided, and most system configuration is performed from the shell by editing simple text files. Arch strives to stay bleeding edge, and typically offers the latest stable versions of most software. Arch Linux uses a "rolling release" system which allows one-time installation and perpetual software upgrades. It is not generally necessary to reinstall or upgrade your Arch Linux system from one "version" to the next. By issuing one command, an Arch system is kept up-to-date and on the bleeding edge.

2. Gentoo - I included Gentoo in the original list but I thought I'd include it again since so many readers responded positively to it. Gentoo Linux, a special flavor of Linux that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme performance, configurability and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience. Gentoo is a free operating system based on either Linux or FreeBSD that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability, performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience. Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo can become an ideal secure server, development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution or something else -- whatever you need it to be. Because of its near-unlimited adaptability, we call Gentoo a metadistribution.

3. Hannah Montana Linux - I laughed out loud when someone asked me why I didn't include it in my top 10 for 2009. It's a real distribution, based on Kubuntu, with a Hannah Montana theme. Hannah Montana Linux is fast, stable and powerful. It includes a Hannah Montana themed boot screen, KDM, icon set, ksplash, plasma, color scheme, and wallpapers. It is not vulnerable to Windows viruses. I've tried to keep my eight-year-old daughter from seeing this one--so far, so good.

4. Mandriva Linux - Very popular in France, Brazil and some African countries. On the consumer side, Mandriva develops and distributes Linux distributions: Mandriva One, the light, easy to use and safe free distro, Mandriva Free, the pure GPL free Linux distro, Mandriva Powerpack, the complete and customizable distro for the power user and Mandriva Flash, the mobile desktop USB key. Free products are available for download from the Mandriva site. Commercial products are available through Mandriva's electronic store, in retail stores and through partners worldwide. The company provides a number of electronic services through its web site. It evaluates its number of users to a few millions. On the corporate side, Mandriva helps large and medium size organizations to migrate to Linux, thanks to its Corporate Desktop and Corporate Server products and helps them administer large number of machines thanks to its system administration tool, Pulse. The company provides to its corporate customers technology, products and services (consulting, training and support). It has about 100 corporate customers.

5. Mepis - Mepis is a Debian-based distro that touts its ease of use, user friendly interface and a live CD image that allows you to try before you commit. The unique nature of MEPIS Linux makes it an ideal foundation for developing a custom version of Linux for large scale deployment. MEPIS is available to work with integrators and end user clients to develop privately branded and optimally tweaked Linux configurations.

6. OpenSUSE - OpenSUSE advertises itself as follows: openSUSE is a free and Linux-based operating system for your PC, Laptop or Server. You can surf the web, manage your e-mails and photos, do office work, play videos or music and have a lot of fun! The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by Novell. Promoting the use of Linux everywhere, openSUSE.org provides free, easy access to the world's most usable Linux distribution, openSUSE. The openSUSE project gives Linux developers and enthusiasts everything they need to get started with Linux. I didn't include it in my top 10 for 2009 list because it might come in the top 20--just not the top 10. I don't hate openSUSE but it definitely isn't one of my all-time favorites.

7. PCLinuxOS - PCLinuxOS was founded in October 2003. The flagship product, the PCLinux operating system, is a free, easy-to-use Linux-based operating system for the home. PCLinuxOS was founded by Texstar, and is headquartered in Houston, Tx. PCLinuxOS is distributed as a LiveCD, and can also be installed to a local hard drive. LiveCD mode lets you try it without making any changes to your computer. If you like it, you can install it to your hard drive. Locally installed versions of PCLinuxOS utilize the Advanced Packaging Tool (or APT), a package management system (originally from the Debian distribution), together with Synaptic, a GUI frontend to APT. PCLinuxOS has a script called mklivecd, which allows the user to take a 'snapshot' of their current hard drive installation (all settings, applications, documents, etc.) and compress it into an ISO CD/DVD image. This allows easy backup of a user's data and also makes it easy to create your own custom live CD/DVD.

8. Puppy Linux - Puppy Linux calls itself; small, fast and free OS. It is a small but full-featured distribution. Puppy Linux is an operating system for computers. Puppy Linux is based on GNU/Linux. It is completely free and open source software. At ~100MB it's worth checking out for a mini distribution. I put Damn Small Linux in my list because I've used it for some time and this was the alternative that some of my readers suggested.

9. SUSE Studio - While SUSE Studio isn't really a distribution, you can build distributions from it--as long as you want them to be openSUSE-based distributions. SUSE Studio is a website that assists you to build customized appliances for use as standalone machines or as virtual machines. I'm including here simply since it was mentioned by a reader. I love SUSE Studio and highly recommend it for others to use. The only drawback is that you can only use openSUSE. If there was something else this cool that you could use the distro of your choice with, I'd be willing to purchase it.

10. Tinycore - Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux GUI Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, and Fltk. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly. Also offered is Micro Core a 6 MB image that is the console based engine of Tiny Core. CLI versions of Tiny Core's program allows the same functionality of Tiny Core's extensions only starting with a console based system. It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access. The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a netbook, an appliance, or server, selectable by the user by installing additional applications from online repositories, or easily compiling most anything you desire using tools provided.

Someone also mentioned FreeBSD, which is not Linux but is still worth a mention. I'm not a huge fan of it and though it touts itself as very secure, it was the only system on my network that ever got hacked. I didn't install or support the system; one of my employees did and noted that one day it was hacked and owned by someone who did a fair job of covering his tracks though we did trace his steps back through several other systems and notified each one along the way.

Home Folder is 40GB ??

Today I entered

df

and noticed that my hard drive was 80% full. I checked my home folder and my files came to 7.3GB but when I viewed all hidden files it comes to 40.6 GB.
I realise they belong to programs but 33.3 GB ??? I have looked in applications and un-installed the programs I don't use but it doesn't seem to have made a dent in the size due to the program sizes being so small.
Short of re-installing is there anything I can do to clean my system up as it is only an 71GB drive, 54GB is used and 13GB free and its a bit cramped for my liking.

Now i dont know how to go about connecting to my Broadband using my username and password. i fiddled around and found a place to put in my username and password, but somehow my computer doesnt seem to connect to teh remote server. someone pl help. thx in adv

I had the honor and pleasure of speaking to Richard Stallman a few days ago while he was in New Zealand on a speaking tour. I had been in an email conversation with him over several days asking about which software programs he uses and I finally connected with him for some clarification and more details. So, if you've ever wanted to get the scoop straight from the man himself, you'll want to listen to the podcast.

The conversation begins abruptly because the phone conversation is a continuation of that email dialog. We also got cut off at one point during the interview and I had to call back.
I found him to be very personable, articulate and a pleasure to speak with. He was very patient with my nervous fumbling and was quite happy to discuss free software, his software choices and even his choice of computer.

To begin, I wanted to know not just about free software and the movement but his personal choices and I got quite a surprise. He is definitely no hypocrite. He is so much of a free software advocate that he even chose his personal computer because of the type of BIOS it uses.

I personally feel that using only free software is very limiting and would be very difficult to successfully accomplish. Richard Stallman doesn't find it difficult at all.

After speaking with him, I wrote "What Free Software Means" and placed it over in the *nix Software forum. Our conversation has certainly changed the way I speak of free software and my perspective on the whole movement.

For the bits that we didn't get to in the phone call, here is the list of software that Richard Stallman uses on a daily basis:

Editor: Emacs
PDF Viewer: xpdf
Audio: Audacity

He doesn't typically use a browser unless he views html offline. He only uses OpenOffice.org when someone sends him a file in those formats. My guess is that if you send him a proprietary file formatted file, he would either not open it or send you back a message stating that you need to convert the file to a free software alternative.

I liked speaking with him so much that I asked for another interview where we could actually have some time to sit down and do something in-depth. He agreed. He will be in southeast Asia next month and I'll catch up with him for that interview. Stay tuned for that one.

News Story Ubuntu 9.10: First Impressions

Ubuntu has redeemed itself with its latest version 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I took a look at Ubuntu 9.10 on October 1st and have been playing around with it for a few days. My first impression is that it is good stuff--seriously good stuff. From the new, updated installer to the faster boot times, I'm impressed. Way to go Ubuntu developers, you deserve applause for this one.

I didn't think that Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) was all that great. There weren't enough improvements over 8.10 to justify a whole new distribution or wasting a cute name on it.

Karmic Koala's installer is the best I've ever seen on any Linux distribution. It's fast, nice to look at and, most important of all, it's easy for people who might be new to Linux. Click through a few screens; enter your name, login name, password and computer name--and away you go toward having a new Ubuntu system. The more difficult part for most users will be the download, burning of the ISO image to a CD and changing their BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Boot times are also much improved. This isn't necessarily limited to just Ubuntu as several Linux distribution developers have been working toward shortening your wait time in the boot department.

Once inside GNOME, you recognize all the familiar desktop items. Nothing new going on here although you might notice a few cosmetic changes with your startup screen and desktop background. I'd have to say though, that the improvements made are well worth the wait from older versions.

If you've been waiting to jump in to Ubuntu, Karmic Koala is the place to do it. And if you have an older versions, this is the one to upgrade to. Wait for the production-level release to come out later this month because right now the 9.10 distro is still in beta.

One word sums up this Karmic Koala Ubuntu incarnation: Super.

You often hear the terms 'free software' and open source used interchangeably but they're not the same. In fact, true free software zealots launch into a fiery diatribe on the issue should you even utter the words "open source" when speaking of free software. Free software is not related to the amount of money you pay (or don't pay) for software; it is an ideology. Free means freedom. Most writers relate the concept to free speech or free beer, however, neither fully illustrates the concept.

Free software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation (FSF), comply with the Four Freedoms.

Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.

Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.

Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies.

Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

So, you see, for Freedoms 2 and 3 to be met, the source code must be available. And not only must it be available, it must be available for modification for any purpose, commercial or otherwise. These two freedoms make the term 'open source' redundant and unnecessary.

The other major issue with the term 'open source' is that it does not imply freedom of any kind. Just because you can look at the source means nothing from a freedom perspective. Okay, ive got a 1024x768 13" laptop display and a 1280x1024 19" LCD external display.

Ive managed to get it extending the desktop onto the external monitor okay but it wont go any higher than 1024x768 when extended. Thats a bit naff, as thats the whole point i own that monitor, so i can have room for coding, and have the design document on the big screen. Is it possible under Linux? I mean it should be? It has been on windows since 98SE lol...

Dear All!

I have a nix machine at home that is connected to the the Internet via adsl. Now i am adding another Internet connection (Fiber optic). How can i do load balancing between these two connections??

( by load balancing i mean that i would like to utilize the available bandwidth to the maximum. I also have a collection of softwares that are very bandwidth hungry and also require a certain level of minimum bandwidth for example my HD video conferencing software requires at least 10Mbps.

Any idea or suggestion will be very helpful. I am using Ubuntu 9.04.

Problem Dual Booting Ubuntu/XP - Can't get into Windows

I have been using a dual boot system for several months with no problems...Windows XP PRO on drive 0, and Ubutu on drive 1. Use GRUB to choose which OS. One day, about 2 weeks ago, for no apparent reason, I can't get into Windows. When I choose Windows from GRUB, I get the "Starting Up" message, and nothing happens. Can get into Ubuntu fine, everything works fine. Can access files on the Windows drive from Ubuntu, and the Windows disk get a "PASS" on the diagnostics check. Bearing in mind that I am not a techie, what can I try to resolve this. I tried running the repair console from the Windows CD, no luck, it does the file overwrites, then says to reboot, but can't access Windows. Any help appreciated..lwould really like to not have to reformat the drive...most stuff is backed up, but hate to reinstall all the programs. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys!

I'm trying to achieve a new ***working*** audio setup on ubuntu after upgrading. As always, after every upgrade, I have to start again. So I'm wondering if there are people out there who would be willing to share their insights of the process. I have already and unsuccessfully spent a lot of time trying to get a less confusing picture of the beast but the truth is linux audio is still really messy, with a lot of subsystems, oss, alsa, pulseaudio, jack, etc. The problem is I don't know what I should stick to. For a while, it was ok for me to accept the situation, but now I'd really like to be able to fix it. I'd like not to have to switch to xp whenever something doesn't work like it should (actually, I always switch to xp if I want to watch dvd's (with menus!) without something inevitably going wrong, but this is another problem... or is it?)
So, what do you think? All contribution will be welcome!

This is the third entry in the continuing "cave dwellers" saga and their new lives with Ubuntu. Someone posted a comment on the previous cave dwellers entry about iTunes not working on Linux and I was absolutely sure that it did. It doesn't. Much to my surprise (and disappointment), iTunes isn't available as a native application on Linux. What's a penguinista to do? Try WINE of course!

I installed WINE, downloaded iTunes' latest Windows application and installed the file. Quicktime and some other applications installed but no iTunes. I tried several times--still no iTunes. I googled. Nope, still no iTunes.

I turned to the youngest cave dweller (13) and said, "I know I've heard you play music on this, how did you do it?" He said, "Napster." I then asked him how he downloaded and synced music with his phone. "We don't. Not since you gave us Linux. We have to use Mom's laptop (Vista)."
I sat silent for a moment until my wife said sarcastically, "Linux not working for you, dear?"
"Yeah, it works for the important stuff" I retorted.
I told the boys that I would research these issues and get back to them.

My wife also asked about printing to our printer (Canon iP1600) from their laptop. I said, "I don't have that working yet." The printer is shared off of my Windows XP workstation. I tried using alternate drivers but it's no use, it would never print their documents. My workaround was to copy their work to my Windows computer and print from there. It's just as well, since their papers need much editing and polishing before being turned in to their teachers.

Yes, I updated the system. Yes, I searched for applications and extras to make everything work. Yes, I'm going to wait for 9.10 to see if it makes any improvements before concluding that this isn't going to work for them. Although they aren't particularly put off by Ubuntu's or my shortcomings on these, I still feel responsible.

They can do 90% of what they need to do and 50% of what they want to do on Ubuntu. I still think it's the best choice for them and me. I've heard no slowness complaints, no viruses, no spyware, no oddball connectivity problems and no random freezes requiring a flurry of reboots.

Ubuntu works. Not perfectly. But it works. It's not for everyone. It might turn out that it isn't for them either but at least I'll be able to say we tried.

Write back and tell me what works or doesn't work with Ubuntu or other distros. I'd be glad to try anything to get printers, iTunes and mobile phone syncing to work; so let me know your experiences.

partitioning space in ubuntu

I have a Doubt...

I have a primary partition for Windows and an Extended Partition for Data.

I have decreased the size of the primary partition, so now I have 20GB of unllocated space.

When I put the live cd of Ubuntu, I know I want space for / "root", /home and swapp.

The partition type for the root, /home and swapp should it be primary or logical?

I will never again refer to the Linux Desktop in any of my writings beyond this post. From now on, it's the Linux User Interface, which encompasses the likes of GNOME, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, CLI and others. These Linux User Interfaces may be used on any Linux-enabled device. These interfaces are not limited to a single type of machine designated as a 'desktop' and I'll not diminish the importance of them by mentioning them in that realm again. Since the dream of a world blessed with desktop computers running Linux is a dream (and a far-fetched one at that), I'll leave its reference to the lesser of my literary colleagues to ponder.

Instead, the Linux User Interface (LUI - pronounced Louie), is now a catch-all for any of the aforementioned window managers. And LUI might refer to a desktop computer, a server computer, a wristwatch, a PDA or a netbook running Linux with a particular window manager running on it. The LUI is how you interact with the operating system and not a particular class of computer.

Gone are the days of the hopeful Linux Desktop. Gone are the days of the tumultuous desktop wars. Gone are the dreams of one day waking up and finding that the US Government has converted to Linux desktops. And gone are the days of my attempts at convincing the world that anything but Windows or the Mac OS will ever serve as a desktop user interface for the masses.

What mkisofs options would you use to ensure the ISO loads and can run on Solaris 8/9/10 when the ISO is made from a Solaris 10 system? There are some pretty deep directories, but I don't know how deep. I also suspect there are some hidden files (start with ".") and some long file names.

Grub doubt

I have a doubu about the GRUB.

When I install linux I make a partition using Partition Magic, then I boot

from de cd choose the file system, the space for the file system and

the space for the Swapp.

My question is, when I dont want to use that partition anymore containing linux and I also want to delete linux, I format it..

OK.. But then when I reboot the pc GRUB fails to load and its a problem....

Is there any safe way to format the partition containing linux, and use it again in Windows normally without this GRUB problem?

Xfce Desktop for Netbooks

I have been exploring netbook systems with various Linux distributions for some time now. I have tried (and still have loaded in one place or another) both Gnome and KDE "standard" desktops, the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, Moblin (does anyone really like this? It drives me screaming into the night every time I try it), Xfce, SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, and a very preliminary version of Kubuntu for netbooks (although to be fair, so far that is nothing more than a few tweaks in font sizes and such, and is not significantly different from the standard KDE desktop). I have heard that more interesting things are coming "soon", such as a Mandriva version specifically for netbooks. Not being one to sit and wait quietly, I have been trying some different Xfce configurations, and I've ended up with a setup that is pretty easy to create, and I'm pretty happy with. Here are instructions and comments on how to do it.

- There are getting to be a number of good Xfce distributions available: Linux Mint Xfce is my current favorite, but Xubuntu, Zenwalk and Dream Linux are all popular, and most of the other major distributions will let you select Xfce as an option.

- Most netbook computers have relatively small displays, with rather limited resolution. Most common is 1024x600, the lowest I have is 1024x576 and the largest is 1280x768. In my opinion what they all have in common is limited screen space, and more available space in the horizontal than the vertical direction. So I have chosen to use two panels, one at the bottom of the screen with text-oriented items, such as menus and the task list, which I auto-hide, and one at the right side of the screen with icon-only items which I do not hide, so the icons and status information are visible and easily accessible. I also set both panels to "Normal Width" rather than "Full Width", so that they don't use screen space for nothing.

- To customize the Xfce panels, right-click on a panel and choose "Customize Panel". (Duh). If there is only one Panel standard in your distribution, click the "+" next to the panel name at the top to create a second panel. Then make sure they are both set to "Fixed Position" rather than "Freely Moveable", and position Panel 1 at the bottom center of the screen, and Panel 2 at the right center. Set both for "Normal Width/Height" rather than "Full Width/Height". Do not auto-hide either of them yet, as it is easy to customize them when they don't keep disappearing!

- Start on the right panel by adding an "Action/Logout" icon. To do this, right-click on the panel, choose "Add New Items...", and then select "Action Buttons". Position that one at the bottom of the panel.

- Move items from the bottom panel to the right panel by right-clicking and selecting "Move", then drag them to the right panel. Do this for the Workspace Switcher, Mixer, Notification Area, and any other icon-only items in the bottom panel. If the panel has a normal clock, you can set it to analog and move it over; if you are using the orage clock, you probably want to leave it on the bottom panel, and perhaps add a Clock icon to the right panel.

- When all of this is done, you should have a panel on the right side of the screen with a column of icons, and a panel on the bottom of the screen with menus and the task list. Set the bottom panel to auto-hide, and you're done with the first stage of the setup.

- The Xfce desktop by default shows desktop icons for Home, Trash and Filesystem. I generally remove either the Filesystem or Home icon, as they are redundant. This can be done by right-clicking on the desktop, and choosing "Desktop Settings...".

I find this desktop layout to be efficient and easy to use. But for inexperienced users, you still need to set up easy access to the most commonly used programs. The question now is, how and where to add those. They could go on the desktop itself, either as individual icons or folders grouping icons; they could be added to the existing panels (probably the right one); or you could create a new panel at the left (or top) for commonly used programs. At the moment I am leaning toward a left panel, based on the same idea of what little space is available being in the horizontal direction, and then grouping program icons on the left and status/information icons on the right. This preference is probably coming from the fact that I hate a cluttered desktop, I've had to work with or help out too many people who have hundreds (or thousands) of icons covering the entire desktop, but others seem to like it that way. Perhaps that is why I don't particularly care for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix style of having everything "in your face" on the desktop.

I'm interested in other opinions on this, and in hearing about experience others might have had with all sorts of users on netbooks.

News Story Cave Dwellers Give Ubuntu Two Thumbs Up

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote, "Has Linux Fallen Into a Well?." It was a tale of two brothers, aka The Cave Dwellers, who had too many complaints and angst concerning the Windows XP installation on my wife's old HP DV-5000 laptop. Reinstalling XP didn't do any good the last time I did it, so I decided to give them Ubuntu 9.04 in its place. All I did was to tell them how to login and left the rest up to them.

Two days after the installation came the first question: "How do I install the Adobe Flash Player in the web browser?" I told them to follow the on screen instructions and promptly shooed them out of my domain (cave).

They've used the laptop non-stop since I reimaged it with no problems reported. They do all the usual stuff with it that they did with Windows: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, web browsing, iTunes, Email and word processing.

My printer comes on and prints homework and their occasional "wows" and "cools" have let me know that the laptop is serving them well so far. I've heard much less door kicking and muffled cursing from them since the big switch to Ubuntu. Now the only door kicking and muffled (and not so muffled) cursing only originates from me.

So, I have to humbly say that Ubuntu is the best thing to happen to that laptop in the past 3 or 4 years and I'm glad I made the transition. I think the boys will learn more about computing from this experience and will have a richer experience with a computer that "just works" instead of the constant frustrations that began this whole incident.

Ubuntu also allowed me to put off buying another laptop for at least a year or so. My daughter, 8, is not so moved by the change. She still assumes that the laptop is slow and painful to use. Did you get that? My 8 year-old daughter branded the laptop as slow.
Kids these days! They're so spoiled--when I was 8, I would have been glad to have any computer--problem was that personal computers hadn't been invented yet nor could I have afforded one anyway even if they had. Sorry, I had a flashback to the Stone Age for a moment.

In a weird way, I'm a bit disappointed that the boys made the transition from Windows to Ubuntu so easily. I expected wailing, gnashing of teeth, name calling and my image burning in effigy--or perhaps the real me being tortured by them placing my beer just out of my reach or something equally as sinister. They seem to enjoy using it but I'm sure someday they'll complain to their kids about Grandpa and the old recycled laptop.

I'm still waiting, almost patiently, for the second question.

my need or requirement may sound funny, also there will be a question, why a driver program to do this? but the answer is simple, we need a driver program:)
Let me just explain what i am looking for is,

A simple linux keboard driver program which should detect a key combination [preferrably, ctrl + k], up on pressing this combination, driver should generate a SIGUSR1 signal and it should send this signal to another program.
I have written [not my own, through google and other resources] the driver program to detect ctrl + k and a small application program to act on the signal. Now I am facing a problem in sending the signal from driver program to application program :(
If i directly use application program's pid in my keyboard driver program, this can be achieved. But I need a more generic approach, because each time executing the application program and geting the pid will be tough.

I tried what ever i could do, i did lot of googling too, but couldnt get any good solution anywhere;(.

I would be greatful if i get any help or suggestions in this regard.

News Story DotNetNuke Co-founder Defends Role with Microsoft's CodePlex

Microsoft announced a new organization this week called CodePlex, which according to its web site, is "a non-profit foundation formed with the mission of enabling the exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open source communities." Now, you don't normally see Microsoft and Open Source in the same breath without raising a hair of suspicion (and in some cases howling laughter). In fact, my colleague Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, who has been writing about Linux and Open Source for many years, wrote in his Cyber Cynic column yesterday, he finds Microsoft's motives in this project dubious to say the least.

That's why I was surprised to find a press release in my In Box yesterday from open source vendor, DotNetNuke proudly trumpeting the fact that their chief architect and co-founder, Shaun Walker was joining the CodePlex Foundation interim Board of Directors. It's worth noting that DotNetNuke is built on Microsoft's .Net platform. In that context, Walker's role with the new foundation makes sense at least on some level, but will it fly in the open source community, a place that has been known to be cold and unforgiving?

Can Microsoft Change Its Stripes?

Walker says in the past he has been critical of Microsoft projects when he didn't believe they were created in the best of interest of the open source community. "A specific area where I have expressed public criticism of Microsoft in the past is regarding their Port25 website, which is supposed to represent the 'Open Source Community from Microsoft;' however, it traditionally has offered minimal support or representation for open source projects which are native to the Microsoft platform," Walker said.

Walker believes CodePlex is different and it represents and evolutionary change for Microsoft."This should not be seen as a sudden change in direction, but as another evolutionary step by Microsoft in terms of recognizing and accepting the importance of open source." He adds, "Microsoft has been progressively becoming more supportive of open source projects over time." He cites as proof their decision to start the CodePlex open source project hosting site, a projects he sees as "highly beneficial in helping stimulate a rich open source developer ecosystem on the Microsoft platform." In fact, Walker is so convinced of this change that he moved his company's code base from it original home on SourceForge to the CodePlex site.

How is it Different?

When asked about possible open-source community criticism for his role with a Microsoft-sponsored initiative, Walker fiercely defended his decision. "The CodePlex Foundation is completely independent from Microsoft with its own distinct mission, vision, values, and charter," he said. He added, "It is technology-agnostic and is intended to facilitate the exchange of code and understanding among software companies and open source communities."

He says this starkly different from the earlier Port25 project, which he said was "owned, maintained, and controlled by Microsoft." He says the two projects are completely different. "Port25 is intended to be a window into the collaborative efforts which are occurring between Microsoft Corporation and open source communities," he explained. "Microsoft's sponsorship of the CodePlex Foundation is intended to address a fundamental problem which they currently face as a company, and which other large software companies in the industry face as well: how to allow greater participation in open source projects."

Whether this flies within the Open Source community remains to be seen, but Walker believes it's in the best interest of his company to be involved with this program, at least initially. Only time will tell if Microsoft has set up this site out of benevolence or self-interest.

Just how good is a SGI Workstation

Sorry to bother everyone with this, but i could do with a little impartial advice before conisdering a purchase.

Im very much into real-time graphics using OpenGL, specifically to create 'Virtual Heitage' applications. These applications feature models and environments with close to millions of polygons. At the moment i use my laptop and a rather slow desktop for testing which, as you can imagine, is far from ideal. I've been eyeing up these SGI workstations recently (eg. Octane 2, Indigo, 02 etc), and i know that these are used by university teams, who make similar graphical visualisations, that these are the thing to use.

But i'm confused. They must be good, but when i look at the specs they don't seem particularly powerfull when compared to a brand new PC with , and some seem to be behind concerning OpenGL implementations (although i expect parts can be upgraded).

So are these actually as good as they are supposed to be for running graphical visualisations, and are they worth the investment ?

News Story Year X is NOT the Year of the Linux Desktop

This year is not the year of the Linux desktop. Next year is not the year of the Linux desktop. In fact, NO year is the year of the Linux desktop. Every year, there are at least ten writers (Ashamedly, I'm included in that ten) who proclaim that the current year or the upcoming year will be the year of the Linux desktop. I've given up hope for it. I've given up on the idea of an acceptable level of Linux adoption on the desktop. I've given up on the prospect of ever having corporate Linux desktops and I think everyone else should too.

The Desktop Wars will be over forever.

By the time there is widespread acceptance for Linux desktops, it will be too late. Web-based desktops will replace the old school heavy desktop operating systems of today.

Netbooks will be the desktop of tomorrow with no local operating system. Oh there might be a JEOS (Just Enough Operating System)--a minimal system whose only job it is to get you to a network (LAN or Internet) but not a traditional OS with applications, office suites, games or the like.
For service subscribers and everyday users, your operating system will consist of a web-based desktop lookalike that is in reality a fancy web page. Renegades, like you and me, will have the choice of web-based desktops or virtual machines that run what looks like a traditional desktop stored on some remote server.

Forget the Desktop Wars, the Browser Wars, The Office Suite Wars and any other petty religious nonsensical wars relating to software. Your service provider will determine which desktop, office suite and browser you use when you connect to and use their services. Chances are there will be ads in all of them, subtly placed to entice but without too much 'in your face' interference.

Will this futuristic web-based desktop society take away your choices?

Yes and no. Having a service provider won't prevent you from using some other online services, suites, applications or even desktops but beware that there might be some penalties involving their use. Think along the lines of certain satellite TV services that don't have your local stations or some phone companies that don't provide 911 emergency call access.

So, it's goodbye to any hope of a sweeping adoption of a Linux desktop. I've put down my banner. I've put down my sword. I've put away all my propaganda for the Linux desktop. I submit to the will of the web designer, service provider and the advertising executive.

I've hoisted my white flag on this one.

Ubuntu 8.04 i386-install problems

Trying to install this version of ubuntu on an older laptop with no OS. I get through the installation process fine and reboot as instructed. Next I get loading grub 1.5 this then changes to starting up and thats it....help.

.htaccess exclude subfolders from urls

Ok here is the code I am working with. What im trying to do is pull up pages without showing the subfolders.

ie. http://mywebsite.com/index.php , my http://mywebsite.com/index2.php, http://mywebsite.com/index3.php and so on. Not http://mywebsite.com/folder1/index1.php, it works for one page but not for multiple pages, and im at a complete loss.

Can someone show me how to get it to work with any page in a subfolder. Thank you.

Ubuntu 9.04, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 - screen flicker

Hi all, I hope you are well. I am very new to Ubuntu and I am experiencing occasional screen flickers (the monitor will go black for a split second, then resume as normal). Now, I have tried googling for a solution but I have not found one yet that satisfies the issue. As you can imagine, its rather headache inducing. My system is a Toshiba satellite pro p100 PSPAE notebook. I have an nVidia Geforce go 7600 and I have installed the Nvidia server setting utility and have driver 180.44. My distro is Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) GNOME 2.26.1.
Things I have tried to do to rectify the flicker include : DISABLING "Force full GPU scaling". I also tried specifying a refresh rate of 60mhz resolution = 1440*900. Although everytime I apply this, the X utility reverts my preference here back to AUTO (only with the refresh rate and resolution: it remembers the disabled "Force full GPU scaling". Sorry about the long post, I am just trying to provide as much information as possible. Thanks for your time and I hope we can sort this together as it is giving my eyes some trouble!!

Corrupt files or Broken Dependencies

Recently I received corrupted file or broken dependencies when using update manager on my Ubuntu 9.04. Could it be due to my aging notebook that the hard disk has bad sector or is it that the file already corrupt in the repositories. Trying to reinstall doesn't work either.

Appreciate anyone who can help.
