I'm reworking my networking scheme and I wanted to make my network file shares accessible via WAN. Rather than dealing with VPN through varying network configurations when I travel I want to make all my file server FTP. Would there be any problems with this?

I know that FTP transfers over a local network will negotiate at full network speeds, but I don't know if there are other issues that would come up. Would it make more sense to use a VPN application (something like Hamachi) that would auto navigate through networks that I'm using my laptop on?

I should mention, that a secondary reason is security on my network. I've recently allowed my neighbor to use my wireless and I don't want them to be able to stumble across my files if they go snooping, and FTP folders would not show up when they search for network resources.

I am going to provide some Networking books in alphabetical order. Which should I read in order and which should I eliminate from the list if any? I would like to learn Networking for two reasons that comes to my mind. I will give both reasons in any order. 1.) For me to learn JPF and this is coming from JPF moderator. They tried to help me configure the firewall with no experience at all in TCP/IP. They failed to configure it with me. They said if I want to still learn it then I would need to know TCP/IP. I am not sure if I need to know other types of Networking or not? 2.) I would like to learn it because I always wanted to learn Networking. I rather learn it more then Programming.

im having a very annoying problem. This is my setup. i am on wireless lan on
ADSL. i am unable to view machines which are in the same workgroup. the thing is, it fluctuates. sometimes i can view them and smtimes i can not. i can leave my machine for an hour and cum back to find that i cant even open the workgroup. we share resources like printers and documents. after some serious troubleshooting i am able open machines by doing a run>\\PC-01 and then i am able to see shared items. but wen i go to "My Network places>View Workgroup Computers" i am unable to either 1. open the workgroup or 2. view all machines (can only see mine sometimes)

Please assist me if you have anyway to solve this on and off bizz.

PS.. my IPs are not static, i have DHCP assigning them i've been thinking it might be linked to this. wat do u think

Hello,

I recently took on a job at my local radio station setting up the buildings computers and networking. It was just placed under new management and staffing so I am pretty much starting from scratch. The big thing that they need done first is this; they use a program called visual traffic for their clients and commercials, etc. The program itself sits on a computer running windows server 2003. Now, there are 2 people at the station who use VT, and both have different reasons. I was told that the old staff had it set so that even though VT was only installed on the server computer, they could click a VT shortcut on a computer in another room and it would open the program and run it from the server. Essentially, both computers could run VT but it was only installed on the server. I was hoping someone could help me set that up once again. They are both on the same network with the second computer running windows xp pro. Thanks a ton.
