I hope I have posted this in the correct place, here goes....

I used to work as a designer for a web company (company A) who ceased to exist about a year or so ago. One of their old clients (company B) recently contacted me to say they were having a problem with a domain which has expired.

The domain was not transferred over to the client before the company A stopped trading. The administrator/owner is still company A. There are no records available for me to get on the internet to either transfer the domain or update the payment details.

Can anyone suggest how I can go about getting this domain up and running please? So far I have contacted enom.com, but there suggestions have been less than useful.

customized URLs in google for apps - works and does not work

Hi,

I use Google for Apps to manage the email for my domain (say - example.com).

Everything works fine (registered, set appropriate MX etc.) except that the custom URLs to access the services (ie. mail.example.com instead of mail.google.com/a/example.com) sometimes work, and sometimes not.

Precisely: there are environements (at work for instance) where I can type mail.example.com and it gets resolved correctly (and the appropriate mail page opens) and others (at home for instance) where the customized URL is not recognized. The enviroments where it works and where it does not work are roughly 50/50% (I tested about 20-30 worldwide when travelling). This happens on different and unrelated clients and OSes.

General name resolution (in all environemnts) for anything else works fine (eg. cnn.com or others are always correctly resolved).

Other sites (not pointing to google for apps) registered in example.com are resolved correctly.

My domain is registered at xname.org.

Frankly, I am clueless. The fact that this behaviour is consistant (in some places it works, in some other not) and that general resolution is correct makes me wonder if resolvers on the way (form my client to the Google DNS) are not limited by the convoluted way customized URLs are finally turned into the actual mail.google.com/a/... URLs.

This is not a critical issue as it impacts only the address to type into the web browser but it is a curious problem on its own.

Any ideas? :)

Thanks!

Now all our clients, instead of going to the email server go to the domain controller instead.

How should we fix this?

Should we create a pointer to send the domain name to the email server IP?
Should we get the reference to our email server changed? (to something like: webmail.company.co.uk?)

Thanks for your help. We're a little clueless so simplistic guides would be good!

Hi Guys I have an intranet setup available in our internal network via internal IP address and that is also available externally via a URL which is mapped to a public ip address. The problem is that I cannot access the external ip address (and hence also the url) from inside the network (admins cant change this) which means I staff need to remember an ip address and a url depending on where they are to access the intranet which is far from ideal.
The dns servers we are currently using are provided for us by our isp, can anyone tell me how I can make it so that I can access the domain from both inside and outside the network. The intranet is sharepoint hosted on a windows 2003 server, and Im assuming there must be someway to do this by setting up dns and adding a manual zone entry but Im not familiar with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Modifying the hosts file is not an option as most of the users are on apple macs which don’t have one.

Hi there,

I have a VERY strange issue here. We have just split our scopes so our voice is separate from our data, we have a number of vlans/subnets and so far everything has went well. however, i have built a new network and whereas the computers get an IP and update DNS no problem, the ip phones get an ip but fail to update dns, the log below is from the dns caching servers /var/log/syslog file on the same network segment, the main master dns server on another subnet gives me nothing in any log file when this error occurs. When i reboot the phone it releases the ip then gets a new ip but fails to update dns....
This is only happening on these new phone vlans, but not with computers, and all other phones on all other subnets are fine. Now i have scoured the net for this issue and can find very little, i know to look at its a complex setup, but we have it working everywhere else, all im looking for are a few pointers as to what this issue could be. Its nothing obvious, the zones DO exist, with the correct permissions, and are correctly referenced from the named.conf file.

Please help :-(
