It works OK but my text is blurry. I read my email in Rogers Yahoo and the text is terrible, very blurry. I tried to adjust the sharpness in the video card driver but to NO avail. Nothing improves the blurriness. Has anyone had this problem? Even the text in this forum is blurry :(
If I remove IE8 using add and remove programs will it default back to IE6?

Reformatting your pc without erasing the docs & files in your disk is a complex work. If your disk does not boot normally & you want to format it, just get another HDD (disk), make sure your new disk is not corrupted by viruses and have the OS installed already.
Set the jumper setting of your new disk to master, then your old disk (you want to fix) to slave, so that when your pc starts, your new disk will boot 1st and you can copy the important files & docs from your old disk to the new one. After copying remove your new disk from the system unit then return the original settings. You can now reformat your corrupted disk without worries because you've copied your files to the other disk.
After formatting set now your formatted disk to master then the other one to slave (vice versa) inorder to transfer your files to your original disk. But before doing this I reccommend you to install 1st anti-virus software so that when you copy your files, the virus that accompanies your files will be terminated to make sure your formatted disk will not be corrupted again.
Hope this will help you out a little... ^__^

Some Twitter postings just demand you read them two or three times to take in what is being said in 140 characters. One such posting was made today by Mozilla CEO John Lilly which simply said: "Firefox user growth has been amazing last 8 weeks or so. +30M or so unique monthlies"

That's worth repeating, 30 million new users for Firefox in an 8 week period. Wow!

Tristan Nitot, President of Mozilla Europe, confirmed the figures when speaking to ZDNet in the UK. Nitot explains that it can calculate the number of users per month by multiplying the active daily users by a factor of three to allow for those days when they are not actually browsing the web. In confirming that Mozilla has seen a "significant increase" in Firefox user numbers, Nitot said "Firefox checks for new versions every 24 hours, when it's running, and when it checks, it pings the Mozilla server. We count the number of pings."

The figures collected show that Firefox now has some 330 million monthly users, and increase over the last eight weeks of some 10 million daily users on average. Although the numbers look good for Mozilla, and the latest global market share statistics suggest it is up around 3% from this time last year, it only has 23.75% of that world share. Microsoft, on the other hand, is in decline with a loss of 5% share during the same period, but crucially Internet Explorer still commands an impressive 65% of the market. That share does vary from country to country though, and Firefox rules the roost in 17 European countries for example.

Hi, umm, I was searching for help on this problem I have with my browsers, and I found an article on here, right?
But
1. The thread didn't really help me all that much and
2. I didn't want to intrude on someone else's problem.

Here's the problem I have. I have problems loading some of my pages. I get errors like Server Not Loaded, or Oops! This Link Appears To Be Broken (along with DNS error - cannot find server) in Mozilla Firefox. When I try in Internet Explorer, the error message I get is "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Thing is, after I refresh about 20 times, the page manages to load, though sometimes not very well. Sometimes the images fail to load, or it comes out, all messed up. I dont know how to explain it.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, and I am also using a Wireless Connection. I have tried flushing the DNS, clearing cache, clearing cookies, restarting so many times. I've tinkered with the Modem, and the Wireless box thing. I'm not all that computer illiterate by the way, but I'm not totally literate either. I've done the pinging thing, and tried so many different sites on how I could possibly fix this, and I'm just growing frustrated. I have no patience, and I feel like throwing my laptop out the window.

Can someone please help me?

(*Also, I dont think it's my net, because I stay signed into my messenger and stuff like that, and when it thunderstorms here, my messenger signs me out every 2 minutes, so that's how I figure my net is going bad lol)

I had this problem last month, and I've started having it since I started connecting to my University's wireless connection. I have no viruses or trojans. I've performed countless checks, as well as clearing out a lot of unnecessary things in my computer. I'm out of ideas on what to do, please. My patience is really on E..

Hi All,

For about two weeks now my cookies are all being cleared automatically when I close my browser - regardless of which browser I'm using (in particular this is forcing me to re-log into any username and password accessed sites). This started about the time I installed the Chrome browser to check it out, but since the issue has arisen I've done a system restore to over a month ago. Prior to that I double checked to make that cookies were being accepted and I removed the exceptions, although that had no permanent effect.

This is what I've double checked as of a few moments ago:

IE 8.0.6001.18813
..... Internet Options
.......... General tab
............... Delete browsing history on exit [not enabled]
.......... Security Settings tab
............... Miscellaneous
.................... Userdata persistence [enabled]

Mozilla Firefox 5.0
..... Options
.......... Privacy
............... History
.................... Keep my history for at least [90] days.
............... Cookies
.................... Accept cookies from sites [enabled]
............................. Exceptions (none)
....................... Allow third-party cookies [enabled]
....................... Keep until: [they expire]
............... Private Data
.................... Always clear ... when I close Firefox [disabled]
.................... Ask me before clearing private data [enabled]
.......... Security
............... Passwords
.................... Remember passwords for sites [enabled]
............................. Exceptions (none)

Assistance in this would be greatly appreciated!

Webpage will not save for offline. Here's more info:

I have a webpage that is very difficult to import and save in Excel, Word, or send it as an email in Outlook. At work, I used Adobe Professional to save it as a pdf, which worked. But at home, the only thing that lets me store this page in it's original formatting is ironically, Gmail with the lab that allows pasting of pictures into emails. But the size is really awkward in Gmail; I have to scroll a lot to see the entire file= annoying! Is there a way I can save the webpage in it's original format for offline? When I try to save it in any format, it does not work. I get a blank page when I try to save it for offline and the notepad document has only the title. I wonder if the webpage uses some other program .. java? or something else? When I save it in html complete, I do not get a seperate folder.. I simply only save the html and the title. mhtml just gives me a blank page.

There has to be an end to this! I seriously have nearly 100 drafts in my Gmail, just saving webpages!

I am currently viewing the page as offline. Would it save if I was viewing the page online?

Odd isn't it, how Microsoft kicked up a fuss when Google announced the Chrome plugin for Internet Explorer on the grounds that it could make the browser more insecure. Indeed, it went as far as to suggest that it doubled the potential surface area for malware and scripted attacks. Yet, amazingly, Microsoft sees no such problem with installing a plugin into the Firefox browser. What's more it is installed without asking the permission of the user and, he says with more than a hint of irony, it left Firefox vulnerable to a drive-by exploit.

This is nothing new, as those with a memory for such underhand shenanigans will recall, as Microsoft started 'silently' installing a .NET Framework Assistant extension for Firefox users earlier in the year. The sting at the time was that it could not be uninstalled, and when an uninstall option was provided (after much media attention) it managed to break some other Firefox extension during the uninstall process.

So imagine the surprise when numerous Firefox users were presented with an 'Add-ons may be causing problems' popup when they had not added any new extensions. That popup quickly explained what was going on (see screenshot) determining that the Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.1 may be "unstable or insecure". Given the option to restart Firefox so that the add-on could be disabled most punters would, I suspect, jump at the chance.

People have a right to be angry both at Microsoft for plugging something into a non-Microsoft browser client which could impact upon the security of that client, and doing so without their knowledge or prior consent I might add, but also with Firefox for allowing this silent installation in the first place.

But why the fuss now, when this plugin was pushed out some months back? Well it all boils down to the recent big Patch Tuesday roll out from Microsoft. On Tuesday Microsoft warned that unless Firefox users had installed the appropriate Internet Explorer patch then they would be vulnerable to an exploit enabled by a .Net Framework Assistant extension bug. Microsoft stated that installing Tuesday's MS09-054 patch protected all users from the exploit, no matter the attack vector, including Firefox users.

Mozilla responded, quite correctly, by telling Microsoft to Firefox off. It automatically turned on a system to block the extension for all Firefox users. Mike Shaver, Vice President of Engineering with Mozilla, explains "Because of the difficulties some users have had entirely removing the add-on, and because of the severity of the risk it represents if not disabled, we contacted Microsoft today to indicate that we were looking to disable the extension and plugin for all users via our blocklisting mechanism. Microsoft agreed with the plan, and we put the blocklist entry live immediately."

The thing is, if you silently or stealthily install software which impacts upon the security of the user, without that users knowledge or prior consent, isn't that called malware?

    <fieldset class="fieldset"> <legend>Attached Images</legend>

firefox-says-no.jpg (14.1 KB)

</fieldset>

I have been using web browser for many years now (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Crome, Safari) and with heavy use of the internet, I have found that all of those browsers except Opera crash after the first few hours of having 20 tabs open with them constantly opening and closing. I know that Internet Explorer was based on Mosaic just like Firefox and possibly Safari. Then Crome was based on Safari. So I'm asking is it possible that a memory leek in mosaic has caused devastating side effects for nearly all browsers based on mosaic code. The memory leek I am talking about is one for when thousands of web pages are stored in the browsers memory index and mosaic wasn't designed for the fast computers we have today as the faster hardware theoretically makes it possible for more to be stored in the memory when there is a limitation in the mosaic software that prevents it from using the full ability of todays hardware. And yes the browser companies try to patch that up but don't do a good job of it as all except Opera have failed to alter the real bug in mosaic and instead they just wrote additional lines to try and go around the code. This topic is for discussion on this mosaic bug as it has nasty effects on todays browsers and only a software company reprogramming the memory core from scratch could truly solve this one.
For the time being, Opera is the only browser bug free when it comes to memory glitches unless you can list more browsers.

Remember when a web browser was so much more than just a web browser? It seems that the days of the all-you-can-eat Internet suite are back as the SeaMonkey 2.0 release code is made available to download.

There was a time when Netscape ruled the online world, but you have to be something of an Internet veteran to remember it to be honest. Back in the day, and that would be 1997 if my memory serves me well, Netscape Communicator was the only browser in town but it wasn't only a browser. You got email in the form of Netscape Messenger which also included a Usenet News client, and address book, a calendar and even an HTML editor known as Netscape Composer.

That was before Mozilla came along with Firefox and declared war on browser bloat. Now, as the likes of Google with the Chrome browser have stripped back to the basics, the circle of online life has been completed. Yes, the SeaMonkey Council is adopting the bloatware principle and brings you an all-in-one Internet suite. There's the familiar web browser, of course, but also a Mail and Newsgroups client with spam controls built in, an IRC 'chatzilla' client and, oh yes, the SeaMonkey Composer for HTML editing.

The big question remains, to be fair, does anyone actually want this kind of Internet application suite anymore? To be honest if I wanted a bloated browser I would still be using Internet Explorer. Oddly, back at the start of 2005 Mozilla itself didn't seem to think anyone wanted bloated browsers either. On March 10th, 2005, the Mozilla Foundation said that the Mozilla Application Suite (as it was then) would not have any more releases. The pretty sound reasoning being that it needed to concentrate on Firefox and Thunderbird as people wanted standalone clients. The development door was left ajar, however, with the SeaMonkey Council taking over the project and release management allowing community members to continue pushing the concept and the code forward.

So why do I say that Netscape Communicator has been born again? Well I have a very long memory, and was indeed around working online at the time, and can recall that while Netscape Communicator 5 never actually saw the light of day it did have a code name. That code name was SeaMonkey...

I hope that someone can help me with this. We have a computer where we can't get any of the installed browsers to work: IE, Firefox, Chrome.

Background
My niece just came to live with us and brought her desktop computer with her (Windows XP Home). She claims that it was working fine at home and it seems to be working fine here. However, the web browsers don't work. This problem happens every time we try to launch a browser.

What Happens When Launching a Browser
After launching IE (version 8), the browser window opens and it says it's connecting. After sitting there for a few seconds, we get the pop-up window saying that they are sorry, but IE is having a problem and needs to close. After dismissing the message, the window stays open. If you try to close it, you get a separate "Sorry" message about closing an unresponsive program.

After attempting to launch Firefox (version 3.5 and the brower my niece normally uses), you just get a pop-up window apologizing that Firefox has to crash now and giving you options to either attempt to restart or quit. Restarting just gives you the same pop-up again. Quitting closes the window nicely.

With Chrome, it seems to go to la-la land when trying to open the default page (www.google.com). After waiting several minutes, I interrupted it's thoughts and tried to go to other pages and just got a message that the site was either unavailable or permanently moved.

Troubleshooting Attempts
I tried doing some research on this problem on the Internet and didn't come up with anything that seemed to match our problem. One discussion thread mentioned trying to launch a browser in Safe Mode. I tried this with mixed results. IE and Chrome work OK, but Firefox crashes the same way. I suggested to my niece that she just run everything in Safe Mode. She didn't think that was very funny.

When my niece's computer arrived, it just had IE and Firefox installed. I downloaded Chrome using IE while in Safe Mode hoping that Chrome might work after booting normally. Unfortunately, it did not.

I tried running Kaspersky anti-virus while in safe mode to see if there were any nasties hiding. This came back clean except for a couple of files that were detected with Weatherbug ad-ware and I'm certain that's not the problem.

I ran HijackThis and looked through the log (see attachment if you're interested) and nothing there really popped out to me, but I'm certainly not an expert.

This computer is attached to a home network along with four other computers that are not having this problem at all. I have tried pinging computers both on our home network as well as external sites. This works just fine. You can even send the crash reports to Microsoft and Mozilla that their browsers crashed. And I mentioned earlier that IE and Chrome work in Safe Mode.

Well, that's about all I know. If anyone can help me figure this out I would really appreciate it.

     <fieldset class="fieldset"> <legend>Attached Files</legend>

hijackthis.txt (10.4 KB)

</fieldset>

In one of my yahoo webmail accounts I (fairly frequently) am receiving an email that has

[No Subject] in the subject line

and has "undisclosed-recipients" in the "to" address line

as well as " " ('nothing') in the "from" line.

Any thoughts? I figure it's from some kind of private emailing source,
except there is ALSO no message contained within. And I did even highlight the body of the msg IN CASE the font they used was white. But I was just wondering if anyone knew of another way a message like that might be used for hacking or ... what ever, just confirm or deny if you think it's some kind of "private" sender.

it's a new "spam" I seem to be getting,
I'm trying to think of ANYone I know who might be trying to send me a private message. Other than that, security issue... ?

Thanx

When I interviewed Scott Karp, who runs Publishing 2.0 last spring, he pointed out to me that newspapers lost control of the distribution channel when the business began to shift from the web. He argued that the newspaper's core business wasn't producing news or selling ads, and certainly not selling subscriptions which even in the heyday of newspapers only accounted for a fraction of its revenue.

No, he said, newspapers were in the business of getting that newspaper onto your front step every morning. They controlled the distribution channel back then. The web changed everything, and they basically watched while Google (and other search engines) took control of web content distribution.

Music

The music's industry's response to the internet has been clear. Send out the lawyers and try to litigate their way to success. But much like the papers who ceded their business to Google, the music industry has ceded its power to Apple and the iTunes Store.

Apple was smart enough to create the device to play the music and a place to distribute the songs legally and cheaply. There was nothing to prevent the music industry from doing this, but they didn't take the channel shift seriously. Steve Jobs, on the other hand saw the future and he pounced.

Television

In a Mashable post this week, Ben Parr points to a Guardian story in which Microsoft’s Director of Consumer and Online in the UK, Ashley Highfield, predicts that the television industry is headed down a similar path, as once again, the distribution channel shifts from the TV to the computer. But Parr points out there is a bit of a flaw in the logic because for the music industry, the song is the product. TV, on the other hand, is selling the advertising around the show, something they should be able to continue to do on the Web (and indeed are doing on Hulu).

Whatever the medium, whatever the message, big media companies can only make big money and stay big if they control the distribution channel. So long as they continue to look at the web as an enemy, or cede the medium to others, they are doomed to fail. Instead of trying desperately to hold onto the old distribution method, they should be doing everything to understand and conquer the new one. Highfield is understands this, but television should adapt better than its media siblings, so long as they don't allow others to take the lead.

News Story Under Pressure, Facebook Pledges to Improve Privacy

If you've used Facebook for more than, oh, five minutes, you've seen a Facebook quiz. "What Greek dance are you?" "Which NFL coach are you?" "Which Diplomacy country should you play?" and so on. (I forget every quiz I see, and I'm up to more than 250 by now.)

But there's one quiz you might want to take a look at, which is the What Do Quizzes Really Know About You? on Facebook, from the American Civil Liberties Union.

Facebook applications typically have a boilerplate page, giving them access to all the information in your account. But this can add up to an awful lot -- especially since such applications also get access to information about your friends as well, the ACLU quiz warns.

The quiz then goes on to show you exactly what sort of information about you it has collected, as well as information about your friends, such as an aggregate of political affiliations, people's locations, and a sampling of groups to which they belong.

The purpose? To encourage users to change their privacy settings as well as to encourage them to contact Facebook to offer better privacy.

Coincidentally, on Thursday, Facebook announced a 12-month plan to enable users "to make more informed choices about their privacy."

"Specifically, Facebook will introduce a new permissions model that will require applications to specify the categories of information they wish to access and obtain express consent from the user before any data is shared," the company said. "In addition, the user will also have to specifically approve any access to their friends’ information, which would still be subject to the friend’s privacy and application settings."

However, Facebook didn't mention the ACLU quiz, instead saying it had been working with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. What Facebook also didn't mention is that the Canadian Privacy Commissioner ruled last month that Facebook had 30 days to come up with a plan to comply with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, or face court action, according to the New York Times.

Hi all,

I'v been battling with this on and off, but cannot work out why I cannot load any pages that are www.microsoft.com.

I can access support.microsoft.com, amazon.co.uk, apple.com, in fact anything at all as long as it is not www.microsoft.com. Has anyone seen anything like this before. It seems to be the same on all the computers on the network. I have even connected a laptop outside of our firewall, and still no Microsoft.com. Have tried using opendns instead of our isp's DNS, but that didn't help either. I even get a webpage from opendns saying did you mean microsoft.com even though thats exactly what I typed in the URL bar. On clicking on the link provided by OpenDNS I then get a page cannot be displayed error.

apologies if this is not the right category, could not decide where to put it, as it is an internet issue, but probably not browser as Firefox and IE7 both do the same thing.

Any help would be appreciated, as I cannot think of anything that would cause one website to not be available, especially when there is no filtering hardware between the pc and the web.

Kind Regards
