Hi All
I've got an interesting problem. A site of mine (sorry I've just seen that no links are allowed so I've removed it) has been on-line for about 2 years now but simply won't come up on a google search and yet comes up in position 1 page 1 of yahoo for various search terms.
I could understand if it came up lower down the orders but it doesn't (and hasn't) come up at all.
A site:xxx search brings up the site but even very specific searches (like all of the home page url except the 'k' of 'xxx.co.uk') doesn't bring it up, nor does a search for the exact home page title or description.
At first I thought it might have been penalised for something or other but as that usually last for up to a couple of months or so it should not affect it now. The site has been given a page rank 2 by google.
I have various other sites which are similar in build (but not content) which do well in all search engines but this one is just a mystery to me.
If anyone can spot what's going on then please, please tell me.
Many thanks
PS [I'll probably need to let someone know the site name at some stage so that they can check oit out.]

For example, a current title reads "Random Game - K******.net", and I'm considering changing to just "Random Game". I've noticed most sites include the " - Site", and in a variety of ways: " | Site", " at Site", " :: Site", etc. If you recommend keeping the website title in the tag, is there a better or worse way to represent it?
I've read that every page should be optimized for a different keyword phrase but if I only offer one product, wouldn't it be more effective to optimize each page for the phrase, factoring? Another idea would be to optimize each page with a different name for factoring. For example, on my What is Factoring? page, I could use the phrase, Invoice Factoring. On the Why Us? page I could use Accounts Receivable Financing. On the How it Works Page, I could use AR Funding. On my FAQ page I could use AR Financing. On my Contact Us page I could use Invoice Funding, and so on. Is this a good strategy?

Forget the Windows 7 launch, the real big news from Microsoft this week is that it has reached a deal with Twitter to include real-time tweet data in Bing searches. If that wasn't excitement enough for the Twitterati, just a few hours after Microsoft made its announcement Google joined in and announced that it too had reached an agreement with Twitter to do the same.

If you still play buzzword bingo, then forget Web 2.0 or even Social Media if you want to score big points, the buzzword today has to be Real Time Web. And that is what has got both Microsoft and Google so excited, the notion of capturing and enabling access to data in real time. It is something of the Holy Grail as far as search is concerned, and something which the deals with Twitter makes a little more of a reality.

In an announcement on Wednesday Microsoft was positively gushing over the glory of Twitter, stating "Twitter is producing millions of tweets every minute on every subject you can imagine. The power of those tweets as a form of data that can be surfaced in search is enormous. Innovative services like Twitter give us access to public opinion and thoughts in a way that has not before been possible".

Which is why Microsoft was pleased to announce that "we now have access to the entire public Twitter feed and have a beta of Bing Twitter search for you to play with" which is great, and you can try the thing out here. Assuming you are in the US that is. The great real time global news and opinion feed that is Twitter is only available to Americans for now. The logic behind that particular decision escapes me, so if anyone from Microsoft, or on the Bing team, cares to comment here and explain I'm ready and waiting.

I am also ready and waiting for the Google Twitter Search which is not just available for the US audience. In fact it is not even available for the US audience, or any other for that matter. All Google has done is quickly react to the Microsoft announcement and let everyone know that it too has done a deal with Twitter to try and take some of the sting out of Bing beating them to the PR punch.

"We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data" says Marissa Mayer, Vice President of Search Products and User Experience at Google, who continues "we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months".

Coming months? Looks like Microsoft really has stolen a march on Google this time. Another feather in the Bing bonnet, but one that may well blow away when Google does get that Twitter search integration sorted. I just hope it doesn't take too long to archive and index the 5 billion tweets that have already been tweeted, and the millions more that are being added every day.

Once upon a time, Usenet newsgroups were the Twitter, Facebook and forums of the online world. All the early Internet community makers were there, and important announcements such as the arrival of Mosaic by Marc Andreesen broke there first.

Then the inevitable happened, and Usenet slowly imploded. That could have been the end of it, but everyone assumed this fairy tale would come with a Hollywood ending after Google got involved and waved a magic wand over the Usenet archive and turned it into Google Groups.

Unfortunately, not a lot happened in the years since February 2001 when Google acquired Deja.com and that archive, with some 700 million Usenet posts appearing to be lost as far as anyone performing a Google search on specific newsgroups were concerned.

As Wired reported, "Searching within a newsgroup, even one with thousands of posts, produces no results at all. Confining a search to a range of dates also fails silently, bulldozing the most obvious path to exploring an archive" - oops! And Wired was reporting a year after the Usenet search bugs had first been spotted and Slashdotted.

The good news is that Google has, it would appear, finally fixed Google Groups. Apparently a bug was found within days of the Wired feature, and it is now possible to search specific groups for specific text and actually find what you are looking for.

The bad news is that date range searches are still not working, although Google has promised that it is now working on applying some tender loving care to Google Groups and getting the kind of functionality we expect from Google into place.

Enterprise Search Marketing programs face a multitude of challenges. Lack of resources, lack of accurate metrics, difficulty getting site changes implemented for organic optimization and so forth. Many of these challenges are more on the organizational side of things than anything else. For those of you in this camp, here’s a challenge that will sound familiar to you: “My business unit should be owning that Keyword instead of Business Unit X”.

Meaning, within the realm of products and solutions that a business offers, at times, there’s only so many keywords to go around for both natural and paid search marketing efforts. Since there’s so much opportunity with non-branded, “generic” keywords (typically those seen at the beginning of the buy cycle), many of these terms are so general that they realistically could be categorized under a variety of your products and solutions. These terms also tend to have huge monthly demand. What this means is that you probably have multiple business units fighting over “ownership” of this keyword.

This is a challenge that affects both Paid and Natural Search. Imagine a scenario where you search on a term and see your brand showing a listing in the Paid results for “Product A”, and a listing in the Organic results for “Product B”. Usually, this scenario arises when keywords are allocated based on data performance and budget rather than business objectives and searcher intent, resulting in multiple versions of the keyword being executed. It can also lead to confusion for searchers when they visit your site and see a word is used in a less than optimal way. And finally, there’s increased work to “explain” duplicate keyword situation to various stakeholders.

Here's a recent rant from search journalist, Danny Sullivan, regarding link spam. This is a good read for anyone involved with SEO.

"...the core problem is that the web has people who think nothing of vandalizing other web sites. That’s what link spamming is. You’re not adding value to a site. You’re simply spray painting garbage on someone else’s property, for your own personal benefit. You have no manners. You have no morals. You ought to be ashamed." - read more.
Community sites, such as discussion forums, social networking platforms, and blogs can use automated filters and human moderators to help combat spam but this does not fully deter spammers. Additionally, there are no federal or state laws (that i know of) against bombing someone else's website with irrelevant comments and threads in order to obtain a link for your own personal gain.

Other than moderating and software filtering, I wonder what other methods site owners use to combat link spam?

I have a website of seo services, I have buy domain 4 months back and start doing seo, i am able to achieve ranking and have index all my 20 page in Google. But very recently i made few changes in my website like i had change structure, content and increase by inner pages than i create title, description and content according to SEO friendly nature. For indexing and crawling of my re designed website i start doing off-page optimization for my website and i saw my new title and description was crawl and change in google listing. but what is shocking after 3 day i am surprised that google has listed my old title and descriptions but keywords are not changed.
I m but confused and want to to give me suggestion if any body had pass from such stage in his SEO practice. Need expert opinion.

Hello All,

While trying to optimize my web site for certain keywords, I can see the need for some tool that would capture the ranking of my web site pages for these specific keywords, on a regular basis.

The way it would function would be, for example:
- every day at hour HH:MM run a process that finds the ranking of my web site(s) for X number of keyword combinations.
- tool might have some kind of reporting tool that shows the progress over time. CSV data alone will do fine, since I can plug this in a spreadsheet software...

Does anyone know of any tool like this? I would like to not use a service that other web sites offer. I'd rather have my own server software that does this work by itself.

If you know of a tool like this please let me know! I thought I'd ask before trying to reinvent the wheel.

Thanks,

News Story The Incredible Arrogance of Being Eric Schmidt

In wide ranging interview (http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091007/live-from-new-york-google-cofounder-sergey-brin-meets-the-press/) with Peter Kafka of the Digital Memo Blog, (http://allthingsd.com/) Google CEO Eric Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brinn did their best to give people the impression...

In wide ranging interview with Peter Kafka of the Digital Memo Blog, Google CEO Eric Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brinn did their best to give people the impression that Google was run by a couple of arrogant SoBs. Whether it was purchasing Android or suggesting that Google could never be evil because of the fundamental trust between Google and its users, they came off as cavalier and pretentious. (But to their credit, they weren't afraid to mention Microsoft by name or admit that Bing is good for competition, unlike Steve Ballmer who refused to name Google in an interview last week.)

See No Evil

Without a doubt my favorite part of the interview was where Schmidt suggested that it was simply not possible for Google to be "evil," whatever the heck that means, because users wouldn't stand for it. Here's what Schmidt said to Peter Kafka (in a quote that is positively Kafkaesque) when he asked him "Why won't you be like Microsoft in regard to antitrust?":

Quote:

"If we went into an “evil room” and had an “evil light” shined on us, and we then behaved in an “evil” way we would be destroyed… there is a fundamental trust between Google and its users.”

Seriously, Eric? An evil room with an evil light? My goodness that's some heavy load of crap he's throwing there, isn't it? I have to admit I use a lot of Google tools (I'm writing this post in Google Docs), but do I trust Google to stay away from the evil light? Not so much.

Million Here, Million There

And as though that weren't enough, his co-founders can casually throw around a million here and there and he doesn't even know until after the fact. That they talk about it so casually in an interview is beyond belief to me. 'Oh by the way, Eric old boy, just bought Android for a few mill. Forgot to mention it old chap.' Here's how Schmidt describes it in the interview:

Quote:

One day Larry and Sergey bought Android, and I didn’t even notice. Think about the strategic opportunities that has created. Sergey found Google Earth one day while he was surfing on the Web. And then he walked into my office and told me he bought them. “And I said, “for how much, Sergey?” And it turned out to be a few million.

Ya, a few million. Who would have noticed, right? My wife came home the other day and said she bought a company. I said, "How much, honey?" And it turned out to be a few million. Oh no bother then. Thanks.

When asked about Google employees feelings of entitlement around salary and perks, Brinn had this to say:

Quote:

We cut down on snacks, etc to “reset expectations” re: entitlement.

Wow. That's some tough love Sergey, eh?. You mean employees have to actually pay for their food? Whoo Boy, you guys are really are hard core.

And these are just three examples. I encourage you to read the whole interview to get the whole picture. These comments show a real lack of connection to what most of us face in the real world on a daily basis. There is a sense of entitlement and arrogance that comes shining through throughout the interview. Let's face it though, whether it's Ballmer, Jobs or Schmidt, it's tough living in that end of the stratosphere, and arrogance just seems to go with the territory.

Hi everyone,

Im a newbie with all of this! And i just wanted to know more about creating backlinks for my website.

If for instance i leave 100 backlinks with the urls of my website on Facebook or Myspace in the form of 100 separate comments would this count as one backlink to google and the other search engines? Or will it count as 100 backlinks to the search engines?

Also does anyone know of a good free accurate backlinks checker online? As i would like to get an accurate view of how many backlinks i actually have on my website. Sometimes when i have checked some of the backlinks i have left on Myspace and Facebook have not been listed and i wondered if anyone would have an idea of why this was?

And lastly are some backlinks more relevant or important than others to the search engines? And how do you create the perfect backlink which will appear in the list when you check for all of your backlinks?

Many thanks.

I have hired a company to do search engine opimisation on a social networking website i have just launched and i have paid them £900 over three months and so far i have only gotten about 30 new members and because im new to all of this i just wondered if this would be considered a successful campaign? Or if the company i have hired are simply not doing a good enough job to drive traffic to my website?

I know that they are listing my website in directories and creating blogs and on forums etc and when i have analysed the traffic that does come to the website there is a 63% bounce rate. Once again is this normal? And is this a good figure? And would i be better off finding another company to market this website?

Many thanks

I read on this forum that we need to make some changes on the homepage so that SEO can index our homepage as search engines see new content and new design.

1. How often should we change the design on the homepage?
2. How often should we change the content on the homepage?
3. How often should we reuse the content on the homepage? the reason i ask this question is because I saw one big article directory owner usually approve my articles after I submitted for about 4 or 5 months.

I have found countless articles and university researches about PageRank but my problem is that i do not understand most of the mathematical symbols that form the algorithm in this papers.Currently,i cannot understand how the Google Matrix(the irreducible, stochastic matrix) was calculated with the algorithm,i do not seem to understand the Algorithm used.

I did my reading from the articles below:
Please i need you to help me go through it,i need a basic explanation(examples will be nice) with less mathematical symbols.

Hi folks,

There is a popular myth about duplicate content, and that is that Google penalizes sites for having duplicate content.

Greg Grothaus of the Search Quality Team of Google cleard that Google itself is not penalizing you for it.

Google recognizes that most duplicate content is not created to be deceptive. There are of course exceptions, which are considered spam. They're being penalized for being spam but not for having duplicate content.

There are some issues that can arise that may negatively affect your rankings.

1) Your link popularity will be diluted. Backlinks pointing to several different URL versions(like domain.com, www.domain.com, domain.com/index.htm) of the same content, will make it harder to accumulate link juice for one URL.

2) User-unfriendly URLs in search results may offset branding efforts and decrease usability as well.

3) With multiple versions of the same thing, Google will spend more time crawling the same content, meaning it will have less time to go deeper into your site, and you run the risk of having content not get indexed.

When a complaining consumer starts topping the Google search rankings for your company, perhaps it is time to start taking them seriously?

Who says that blogging is a waste of time? Not me, but then I've been blogging for a while now, admittedly in a professional capacity as a technology journalist rather than the perhaps more usual rant and ramble personal way. Andrew Sharman did the rant thing recently, and oh boy is he glad he did. It seems to have led to him getting a pretty hefty refund from a tour operator after a particularly poor vacation experience in Tunisia.

Sharman sent a letter of complaint to the tour operator, a 10 page letter of complaint no less, but after six weeks had only got the normal thanks for your complaint acknowledgement and nothing appeared to be getting done. So the web developer decided to blog about it.

I've just been reading Andrew Sharman's blog in which he describes at some length just how awful his holiday trip to Tunisia, booked via Thomson holidays, actually was. Under the heading of 'Thomson trip to Tunisia, staying in Marhaba Palace Review' Sharman describes how Tunisia itself is a nice place, but recounts the bad experience he had booking his vacation and actually taking it. He mentions how he was promised a double bed but ended up in a hotel without any double beds at all, how he was told the hotel was popular with his age group but it actually turned out to be a haven for the elderly, and how a day trip to the Sahara was possible when in fact it was an eight hour drive away.

But it gets even worse than that, according to the Sharman blog. He details how the sales representative promised a free drink with every meal on his full board tariff but discovered only expensive drinks at the hotel, and how the beach was filthy and the hotel not a lot better.

After publishing the blog and then Tweeting about it as well, the thing kind of took off. So much so, in fact, that if you Googled for 'Thomson Tunisia trip' or even 'Thomson Tunisia review' instead of getting results from the holiday company itself or glowing reviews of vacations, you got his blog rant ripping them to shreds. Thousands of readers were proving that citizen journalism extends into the world of travel, and corporations can ignore it at their peril.

Sharman then informed Thomson of just how popular the blog entry had become and ended up with a £595 refund on the holiday that had cost him £900 originally. He says that the firm asked him to mention on his blog that he was happy with the way the complaint had been dealt with, but Sharman refused to play ball and instead insisted he would say the complaint was resolved but also explain how that resolution came about. A spokesperson for the tour operator says "all our customers can expect to receive an excellent level of service before, during and after their holiday, regardless of whether or not they publish a blog" - although I'd like to add that, as Mr Sharman's case seems to prove, a good old rant sure doesn't do any harm!

Content is king

Search engines index the content of a website, and the more content you have,
the better. Add relevant content to your website. I mean, if your website sells dogs and cats, you can add reviews on the dogs and cats have. This will also
attract potential buyers to your website. Usually dog lovers do research first before they buy online.

Use keywords in text

In order to target keywords in searches, use the same keywords in the text.
For example, an article on Web Standards-based layout will use the keywords
design and standards and layout instead of using architecture and templates.
However, using the keywords repeatedly does not help either.

Use synonymous phrases in title, meta tags and headers

Include related words and phrases in page titles, text, and header meta tags.
This will expand the range of keywords that the web page might be listed under.
For example, my page has a title of "Search Engine Optimization tips and Tricks -
HTML, CSS, XHTML - FierceStreet Networks!", while this specific tip header is
"SEO: Optimize Your Web Pages". This page has been targeted for anyone searching
for either of these words. Search engines value the page title, meta tags and page headers (within HTML <H1> tags) more than any text in the page.

Use descriptive links using key words

When linking to web pages within your website, use descriptive words in that
link to describe that page. Advanced search engines use these words as the keywords defining the content of the page.

Some months ago Matt Cutts informed us that PageRank Sculpting is not possible any more by using the rel=nofollow attribute. Nofollow method is straightforward and time efficient comparing to other methods such as iframes, javascript, Java, flash etc. An other problem is that the sites that already use nofollow might suffer a PR loss.

Using rel=nofollow for PageRank sculpting is still possible by using a special free Javascript/PHP script. What is does is that just before the HTML code is sent to the user, it scans for nofollowed links and it replaces them with obfuscated javascript, post requests etc. The URLs are encoded and they can not be detected by Google.

This script has been tested for more than 3 months and it seems it works very good with all the browsers.

You can download the script, find installation instructions and more info about how it works in this site:
