Hello all,

I'm a SW developer, have been working in industry and research for 8 years, mainly coding in UNIC/C/C++. I'm currently working on a fixed term contract that ends in a year from now.

My skills in SW are obsolete, I think my market value is very low.

I want to change my orientation a little, and try something more marketable. I'm tired of development, I don't have the energy to learn new languages and frameworks etc. Any young college grad. can do it better.

So I'm thinking of going into IT security.

I have no past experience on IT security at all. I have to get training.

As I see it, my options are:

OPTIONS: 1. Enroll in a Univ. somewhere, get an MSc degree in IT security, online or with physical presence

2. Try to get the CISCO Security Professional certification.

MY QUESTION: Is there any other, better option? If not, which one of these two is the best, from your point of view?

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how to go about determining what I’m worth based on my qualifications. I’ve looked at sites like glassdoor and payscale, but they just provide “average” salaries, which isn’t as useful as one might like. I just graduated with my Master’s degree in Computer Science and have a couple of internships under my belt.

Hi there,

I am looking for an IT Liability form.

Here is the background; we have a client currently that has been with us for approximately 2 yrs and we have taken fabulous care of them. We have performed a technology review at the beginning of the year and they were aware that they need to upgrade their servers, etc. So far, they have not heeded our warnings regarding upgrading their equipment. We want to protect ourselves and have a form to eliminate the liability that could possibly arise from a catastrophic system failure. We have given them every opportunity to upgrade.

Any suggestions? We can't possibly be the only ones in this situation.

Thanks!

Hello, my name is Derek and I'm a geek. I've been playing with computers for about 10 years now. I'm 23 and I am not sure which area of IT I would like to specialize in. I hope some of you may have some advice for me.

Background
I convinced my parents to buy a computer in 1999. I spent all of my time on the computer and eventually learned how it worked and how to fix them. I learned HTML and had my first web page up at the age of 15. When I was 16 I started toying around with QBASIC and learned the very basics of programming. A year later I started learning the basics of VB and played with it for a little while.

When I was 17 I got my hands on a Linux disc (Mandrake 8!) and I have been a Linux / FOSS advocate ever since.

After high school I studied computer engineering for one year before dropping out to get a job. I enjoyed college, but I slacked off and fell way behind. I would not have dropped out if I could do it over again.***

After dropping out I got a job working as a remote Jr Linux system admin for a web hosting company in LA. That job was enjoyable however repetitive and very slow at times.

After about nine months of working as a remote jr linux admin I went to work for a Wireless ISP. I was mostly a tech support person, but I also got to go outdoors (tower climbing, customer installations) and play with a few servers.

After this I did some freelance computer work and web development for some clients around town.

CURRENT
I now work as an IT Technician for a medium-sized business in the city. I can't complain about the position, I get to do a little of everything.

Hence the problem - I am worried that if I continue doing a "little of everything" I'm never going to be really valuable and never really make a decent living at what I do.

I am interested (or maybe not interested) in too many topics. I'll list them below. I cannot pick one to concentrate on and learn.

I go back and forth from wanting to learn one thing from wanting to learn another. For example, I started to tackle a Testout Training CD for the CCNA Certification without finishing, then I started training on Win 2008 Server / Active Directory without finishing, and now I have a Learning C# book on my desk!

I'm interested in everything, however I realize I cannot do it all.

Running my own business has also been a dream for several years. But we're back to the fact that I'm not a specialist in anything and steady income is VERY important to me right now.

What Interests me:
Web Development - PHP/ASP/RoR
Web Design
App Development - C#
Databases - MySQL
Linux
Sys Admin
Network Engineering
Virtualization
Telecommunications
VoIP
Net Security
FOSS
Photography
Audio Engineering
Outdoors-ish stuff.

Has anyone out there experienced a similar situation when not having a clue about what they want to specialize in?

*** Yes, I have considered going back to college and I plan on going back at some point. Probably next fall if time and money permits.

Hi all.

I'm currently in the planning stages of starting an IT business and would like to elicit some advice. The business will be similar to a "Geek Squad" service that will focus on residential and small-business customers.

Services will include: virus/spyware removal, security tune-ups, hardware/software installation, networking, data backup/recovery, and training.

My questions are:

1. For troubleshooting and repairing systems, what are some good (free?) applications that I could carry with me on a thumb drive?

2. What tools should I absolutely make sure I have on me when going on a call?

3. What kind of supplies (cables, hardware, etc.) should I make sure to have on hand when going on a call?

Thanks in advance for any advice or direction you guys might be able to offer.

I am currently working on my project which involves me developing a system where order can be placed to buy sports kits. I am implementing security features like Encryption, Access control and Intrusion detection/tracking. The intrusion detection/tracking part simply has to do with knowing what each employee does, data viewed, deleted e.t.c more like a log file.

I am conducting this interview and would like to get a feed back as soon as possible. Please see questions below

1.	How is Intrusion detection/tracking best implemented?
2.	Can you clearly outline or define the steps involved in intrusion
detection/tracking
3.	Which of the programming platform enable you to implement
intrusion detection/tracking?
4.	Can employee’s performance be affected knowing that there is
an intrusion detection/tracking that tracks everything they do?
5.	Are there drawbacks in the implementation of intrusion
detection/tracking? (setback)

Thanks a lot, your participation will be highly appreciated

Well... I am a sophomore in college and torn between choosing 1 of 2 majors.

Computer Science or Information Technology.

My financial situation isn't all that great, my parents are helping me out a lot, but they advise me on getting my degree and getting out into the 'real' work field as soon as possible.... which I completely understand.

Sadly, I love learning about computers... every aspect of them. If I had the choice I'd probably stay and take every class this university has to offer hahah, but that's a debt I do not even want to bring into reality.

Alas this is the year I must choose a major/minor and finish up my studies within the next 2-3 years.

Right now my idea is... Major: IT Minor: MIS(management information systems) .... do you think it would be beneficial to add in a minor of Comp Sci?

Just wondering what opinions/thoughts you all had on the degrees and if you had any advice to give through your various experiences.

Sorry for the wall of text

Hi everyone,

I really hope I'm posting this in the right forum. This is my first post and I hope I don't bother or offend anyone. Please excuse my newbieness.

Here goes: I want to write a children's ebook that would feature the ability to click on any word to hear it's pronunciation. Also, I want the child to be able to read along with the audio. This means that the words would need to be highlighted in time to audio pretty much like in karaoke.

I searched the internet for days looking for programs and tutorials... I've emailed ebook maker companies... I've downloaded and played around with Adobe trial versions of Flash, After Effects, Dream Weaver, Acrobat. Griffin Technologies' iKaraoke TunePrompter comes the closest for syncing text to audio. And believe it or not Power Point comes the closest to inserting sound and music as well as the ability to record sound.

There is a children's ebook website SNIP that does EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I emailed them too but so far I haven't gotten a response.

Could someone please help me? I look forward to any and all responses.

I am programming in c++ since past two years and have written several big projects in c++. I have done 10 projects on rentacoder with average rating of 10/10!

However this offer is only for native English speaking people.

I will give you lessons in english and then some assignments. And we will use Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 as IDE!

Actually anyone with common sense would have figured out why I am offering this tuition for free. Actually I want to practice english speaking. That is why I have only allowed native english speakers for this tuition!

And hey you must have a pc with mic and skype installed!
Its so damed confusing and difficult to use. I spent three days trying to install something on my Fedora 11 machine that would take me no more than about 10 minutes in Vista (or any other version of MS-Windows). As an example: wxWidgets. I couldn't even successfully compile their online Hello World tutorial because of uninstalled extra packages. Then after installing more packages using yum program, tried to compile Hello World and the g++ compiler couldn't find some include files. So I used find command to locate the header files and created a makefile to set -I flags for the include directories. That finally worked, but now I get trillions of undefined variables error messages. From this short experience it is no wonder that more *nix programmers don't commit suicide!

As for Vista: the same Hello World tutorial compiled without errors or warnings in about 15 minutes using VC++ 2008 Express. And not much more than that using Code::Blocks.

Hi people, my first post here. Please bear with me. I just wanna know your opinion about this situation
if someone says to you that the security of an operating system is built on the hardware mechanism that separates user mode from kernel mode which means that an attack that succeeds against one operating system must have broken the hardware mechanism, and therefore the same attack will work against any other operating system on the same type of machine. Thus there can't be any reason to believe that one operating system is more secure than any other.

How would you counteract his invalid argument?

I'm currently a software engineer and looking at staying within the technical/programming IT field for the forseeable future. I'd like to do an MBA to increase my knowledge of businesses/commerce in general. For instance being able to understand the economy much better, finance/stock market or how companies operate.

A career change isn't what I want and the roles I'm expecting to get are along the lines of senior software developer, senior software architect, etc. I don't wish to be an IT manager or CIO so as I said---technical roles only.

What I'm concerned about is that for senior technical roles, a masters in CS might be seen as an appropriate masters vs an MBA. If I wanted to be an IT project manager then yes, an MBA might be more suitable.

Another reason I'm against masters in CS is unless you work for orgs like NASA, you wouldn't need any of the advanced subjects in a masters. I find that even in senior technical roles, undergrad CS degrees are more than enough. Let's not forget that probably 90% of software development roles out there are not with research companies.

I wanna do an MBA but would it work to my disadvange?

Hello,

I'm in a situation, and I'm having an unusually difficult time deciding what to do.

I'm 38 years old, and I work as software developer for a major university in my area. I've held this job for about 3 years now and things are going great. I have been working in the computer/tech field for the past 15 years, however, I do not have a college degree nor any certifications. Lately, I've been thinking that I want to pursue a more research-oriented computer science career, rather than just programming...like maybe programming in robotics, or AI, or something like that.

So last month, I decided to take some courses at the university I work at and persue a degree in computer science since I would have gotten a 75% educational discount(since I work here), but my application for admissions was turned down becuase my high school grades were not that great.

So now, I'm rather bummed and I don't know what to do. I spoke with a person in the admissions office of the university where I work, and he said that I could goto a community college for 2-years, and then re-apply to my university, with a better, but not guarenteed, chance of being accepted.

I also have the opportunity to goto this community college with a 90% discount because I have family whom work there.

Now, that sounds great, and almost obvious...just goto the community college for 2 years, get good grades, and apply again after those 2 years at the university I work at.

However...I'm 38...that means I'd finish the community college at age 40! And then, even if I get in at my university, I wouldn't be able to get a bachelor's in Computer Science for another 2 or 3 years...which means I'd be 42 or 43!

So I started thinking, well maybe I should just get some certifications. Then I could at least put those on my resume. But I think degrees are looked at with more respect that certs. at least when working at a college or university.

But really, I don't know what would be best for me.

So, I feel old, and maybe I should just stick with what I'm doing until I retire...and if I ever need to change jobs, just rely on my experience.

Any advice?

Thanks

I've been wondering for som while now how software like a game or a office-suite is distributed. Because if i compile something on my Intel dualcore and the move it to a AMD (something) computer chances are my compiled software won't work since the hardware is different. Am I right?

So is software distributed with a compiler or does the installation program use the compiler that comes with the os?

I hope my question is understandable, if not please comment and I will try to clarify.

I'm considering new strategies to recruit clients for my Network services and IT consulting business. I've made a list of target businesses in my, relatively small, market and I had planned to send post cards out. But after receiving a cold cal from a local marketing firm the other day it got me thinking about that as a viable strategy, there are roughly 100 businesses on my list so calls would be viable if spread out over a week or two.

Does anybody have feedback on these two marketing strategies, or an alternative method that might work as well?

Would potential clients consider Cold-Calling too pushy?

Are post cards even noticed in a professional environment, or will they just be thrown away.

Should I give the information directly to the receptionist who handles the call, or ask to speak to somebody with decision making authority?

Do businesses consider one/both of these methods to be tacky or obtrusive?

Hi All,

My name is Ron. I work for a PR company in their IT department as a report developer. Specifically, I am using SQL Server Reporting services and Crystal to develop reports for our company's intranet. I started at this company 2 1/2 years ago as a desktop support intern while taking full time courses at ITT Tech.

Here is the Irony. I'm in a really interesting situation, because the degree I'm getting is more specific in network engineering and IT. So, at school I learn about configuring Cisco routers/switching, routing protocols, topologies... etc... And then i come to work and learn about databases and writing long stored procedures and queries and I am in a development environment...

I'm also concerned about the reputation of my college. Many people are skeptical of ITT Tech and their programs, and part of me regrets the decision to take courses here. But, live and learn. I'm getting the impression that alot of employers just like to see that you have a degree in this field, and experience is more important. But then again, i've heard that some companies prefer a more prestigious education.

Thankfully i work for a reputable company and I have some experience. So, hopefully employers can see past the college I attended if they have a problem with it.. Continuing my eduction will be mostly through certifications on top of my degree..

Anyway, sorry to unload all this on you.. Looks like i have 3 routes i can take.. Network/Systems administration, Database administration, or Software development...

Should I pursue software development... I like the hours, flexability and creating programs... But I like networking.. can be fun to go around and fix networks... Or Database administration. I've heard this pays alot cause it could be kind of boring and not enough qualified people.. Or just do it all as a consultant down the road??

I don't know. I might just stay at the company I'm at for awhile because their treating me pretty well and get some more experience.. But wanted to get some insight from you IT guru's about my situation. Thanks for reading!
