Calling social media sites a "productivity black hole," the UK IT services group Morse said that staff who use Twitter and other social networking sites while at work are costing UK businesses £1.38bn every year, according to the BBC.

More than half those surveyed said they used social networking sites during the working day for personal use, with the average being 40 minutes per week on these sites. While this doesn't sound like much, it adds up to almost a week a year, Morse said.

Other responses from the study, which surveyed 1,460 people:

A third of workers said they had seen sensitive information posted on social networks.

Ive dumped $300 into facebook ads, $100 into myspace ads, $300 into google ads, adgitize ads, projectwonderful ads, $10/mo on blogcatalog, and I still cant even pull any more people. The clicks are there because Ive had high advertising cost. Click conversion is decent about 56% CTR. Converting sales is boooooo, it sucks.
Saying that, I do wonder if it will enhance my online experience, especially social media apps. I remember back in the days that everytime you upgraded your OS, it meant buying new versions of software. Now, since everything is online, OS upgrade has less of a major software haul effect.

Thus, what are your thoughts about how OS actually dont impact our digital experience anymore?

A friend of mine shared a warning yesterday about a hoax email being circulated about "Facebook needs you to re-enter your login" for security purposes and then it attacks your computer. This is really dangerous because we have so much on our computers and then it can spread non-stop in this never ending network of connections.

So what do you think about this? What precautions do you take to prevent this? First of all, I have a mac but in today's day, that is not even a protection anymore. Second, I have Norton Security suite but it does slow my computer at times. Third, I am very cautious with what I link to. I have added a plug-in to my Firefox to warn me of fishy sites.

With the adoption of social media at fast speed, I truly believe that now the laggards are embracing it. You are seeing older generations on Facebook. One important fact is that technology has become commonplace in society and it will not be obsolete, like my lovely BetaMax or Commodore 64.

So what do you think about this?

the first 2.5% of the adopters are the "innovators"

the next 13.5% of the adopters are the "early adopters"

the next 34% of the adopters are the "early majority"

the next 34% of the adopters are the "late majority"

the last 16% of the adopters are the "laggards"

Twitter, Inc., has shut down 33 fake Twitter accounts created by Republicans using the names of Democratic state representatives, but fake websites using the Democrats' names are still up.

The story was reported in the Hartford Advocate, an alternative newsweekly.

State Republican Chairman Chris Healy told the paper that it was the Connecticut Republicans' idea.

Twitter announced earlier this year that it planned to verify the accounts of people such as public officials, after several cases of Twitter impersonations.

According to the paper, a Democratic legislative leader reported the accounts to Twitter, which replied, "A person may not impersonate others through the Twitter service in a manner that does or is intended to mislead, confuse or deceive others. ... Impersonation is against our terms unless it is a parody. The standard for defining parody is, 'Would a reasonable person be aware that it's a joke?' Because this is not the case in your situation, we have removed the profile(s) from circulation."

Healy criticized the Democrats' response as "stopping free speech."

The fake web sites all use the same theme and basic design, and note at the bottom that they were "Paid for and Authorized by the Connecticut Republican Party, Jerry Labriola Jr. Treasurer." They are called "Meet Matt Lesser," "Meet Joe Aresimowicz," and so on, with the names of the 33 Democratic legislators.

The sites, as well as other articles about the issue, can be found with this web search.

But why don't we all post a win or an accomplishment so that we can all be inspired. I will kick this off.

One of my clients was extremely dubious of social media in any way, shape or form. Whenever I attended monthly status meetings and spoke about the opportunities that existed to promote their busines through social media he would make joking comments that were subtle hints that he saw no benefit. So, I took matters into my own hands. I built a Linkedin presence for the company including a profile for the owner of the company and their heads of sales and marketing. In Linkedin I joined groups and posted announcements of webinars and events. I established a blog for the company and posted up content that they used in their monthly customer newsletters. I developed a twitter presence and tweeted about wins and tweeted links to case studies and press releases. I established a channel on YouTube and an account on SlideShare and put up sales content. All of these accounts and presences had links back to the corporate website. I then created a field on the various forms on the website asking people to say where they heard about the company. Two months later I gave a presentation during a monthly meeting showing how a number of leads were attributed to the presences I created. I also showed through google analytics all of the referrals to the corporate website that came from these presences and accounts. It was a gamble because I knew that if the results were not convincing or the owner found out what I was doing before I could prove the benefits I could lose my contract and possibly be sued. Happily, after the initial shock wore off I received a very public apology from the owner and he had me document all of my efforts and establish guidelines and processes to keep all of the activities moving forward.

One of my clients brought the blog to my attention and is interested in the possibility of using twitter in the company's customer service efforts. To be honest, while I have read about theoretical use of twitter in this fashion and I know that some consumer-oriented companies are doing this, my client is a B2B operation and my first reaction is to tread lightly as you do not want to alienate or annoy customers. Is anyone working with a

GigaTweet has been counting the total number of messages posted to Twitter in real time, and the rolling count is almost hypnotic. Overnight the 5 billionth Tweet was posted.

So what was it?

Perhaps someone speaking out against corporates trying to gag freedom of the press again? Nope.

Maybe another campaign kicking off against insensitive and homophobic ranting in the Daily Mail newspaper? Nope.

Must be an anarchist orchestrating a protest movement then? Nope.

Which surely only leaves the willy waving celebrity crowd, was it one of them letting us know they had eaten dinner with another celeb and were off to bed now? Nope.

It surely wasn't me, @happygeek, saying something profound? Nope, no chance of that I am afraid.

Actually, the 5 billionth Tweet was something of a let down, yet a refreshing reminder that the real power of Twitter is with ordinary users having ordinary conversations with their ordinary friends.

It would appear that Tweet 5,000,000,000 was posted by one Robin Sloan (@robinsloan) in reply to a user called @sexysloan9912e, and simply said "Oh lord".

Indeed.

I saw this question posted in one of my linkedin groups and thought it could be an interesting one for this forum. What would you say is the best social media outlet as a starting point for a small business to launch their social media strategy from?

I would say that it depends on two factors, product and target market. If it is a small business with a product that is targeted at a national market of businesses, Linkedin would be a good place to start as they can seek out and join groups that have the very companies they are targeting as potential clients. If they are targeting consumers in a smaller, regional market then they might want to look at Facebook where you can set up fan pages and advertise to people who are within your target market.

Any other thoughts?

I recently came across a Wall Street Journal piece about branded online communities (link below) and the author talked about how while Lego was looking to come out with a new line of products they tapped into an online community for people who are Lego enthusiasts set up by people who are Lego enthusiasts. The basic thrust of the article is how companies that set up branded online communities as an extension of their marketing effort can turn these communities into market research tools, early warning systems for customer concerns and complaints and customer loyalty building tools. The author pointed out that for corporations to make this work they have to let go of their tight branding control and allow free exchanges of ideas to occur. It was also acknowledged that while communities like this can offer up a wealth of information for the corporation they also can become forums for people to bitch about product issues and that the corporations have to fight the urge to edit out negative threads so that the free flow of all info remains pure.

Does anyone work for a company where they think this type of branded community could work and where the company has the patience and resiliency to allow negative threads to run their natural course?

The 2008 presidential election featured a new emphasis on using the Internet, ranging from raising money to advertising to getting support.

It's still going on. Facebook, in particular, due to the ease in which people can set up affinity groups, is proving to be a new source of online activism, according to a recent article.

"Facebook’s features, such as the ability to add real-world events to a group or fan page, the ability to send a message to up to 5,000 members on a group page and the built-in discussion boards, make it an all-in-one stop for the connected protester," the article said.

It's also expected that, while the Federal Elections Commission ruled in 2006 that campaign regulations do not apply to most Internet activity, except for paid political advertising on someone else's Web site, new rules on campaigning will be in effect by the 2010 election cycle, according to an AP article.

"When does a blog connected to a campaign need to disclose its allegiance?," the article asks. "Does a candidate's personal Facebook page need a disclaimer if it is updated by a staffer? Can a campaign-related tweet — a message posted on social media site Twitter — even be regulated?" Another example cited in the article was whether Internet advertising -- such as pop-up ads whenever someone Googles an opponent -- need the sort of "Paid for by..." disclaimer that printed ads require.

Ironically, however, a report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project called Civic Engagement Online found that the Internet hasn't much changed the political landscape.

"Contrary to the hopes of some advocates, the internet [sic] is not changing the socio-economic character of civic engagement in America," said Aaron Smith in the report. "Just as in offline civic life, the well-to-do and well-educated are more likely than those less well off to participate in online political activities such as emailing a government official, signing an online petition or making a political contribution."

However, this may change in the future, Smith said. It is "not inevitable that those with high levels of income and education are the most active in civic and political affairs," he said. "In contrast to traditional acts of political participation -- whether undertaken online or offline -- forms of engagement that use blogs or online social network sites are not characterized by such a strong association with socio-economic stratification."

Apparently, women are more than twice as likely to go online and vent when stressed than speak to their partners. That's according to the results of a recent survey which also suggests that when stressed many women go and blog instead of turning to alcohol or chocolate.

The survey, conducted by women's online community Powder Room Graffiti reveals that some 58% of women will write more online during difficult times, either by blogging, commenting or taking part in social networks. Only 23% said they turned to their partners when things got on top of them.

"Our research would certainly indicate that the blogosphere has a real psychological benefit for some women and appears more effective than the more obvious stress relievers of alcohol or face-to-face exchanges with a close confidant" said Diane Hayman from Powder Room Graffiti. "Being encouraged to speak honestly is clearly very liberating for women... we’ve seen people share and debate the full gamut of subjects, many of which would be off-limits in a coffee morning setting or on the pages of a glossy magazine" she added.

Or, of course, there's the alternative theory that the Internet in general, and social networks/communities in particular, are just great places to let off steam no matter what gender you happen to be.

I was watching TV the other night (I have Dish Network) and I saw a commercial for placing targeted TV ads on Dish Network through Google TV ads. I checked out the Google TV ads info (including watching a really quick informative how-to video) and discovered that is built along the sames lines ad AdWords but for TV. You can pick the regions targeted, the shows who's audience you want to target, the length of your campaign and your CPM (in this case, cost per tv's the ad is shown on).

In terms of creating the ad, they offer you a variety of options from bidding to their community of ad producers to creating the ad yourself (as long as it meets their editorial and technical guidelines) to other less technical and possibly lower quality options.

Now, let's say you are developing an online community for baby boomers who are contemplating retirement. Your community is going to cover everything from health & fitness, investing, vacations, estate planning, etc. Would you include a TV campaign as part of your strategy at building the online community knowing that you can focus your advertising on the TV viewing habits of your target market? Considering the inexpensive video HD video cameras and editing software available that can be used, I would take a shot at it as long as I had a budget and had reasonable expectations.

The author and his company are both based in Romania so I am not certain what their laws are like in regards to marriage but I am pretty certain that outside of certain areas of Utah if you have more than one wife in the US you are breaking the law!:D
Anyway, take a read and tell me what you think and I will pass on our assessment to the author.

In the last 2 days on Mashable it has been reported that new user and unique visitor growth has leveled out for both Facebook and Twitter (both are below 2% growth per month in the US over the last few months). Linkedin, however, is growing at close to 6% monthly both in the US and internationally. Additionally, Linkedin recently surpassed the 50 million mark in users.

The question is, do these two trends indicate that Linkedin is on its way to being the social media of choice for businesses? I would say so but as there is no advertising in Linkedin the use of Linkedin is truly as a networking tool. The marketing efforts in Facebook and Twitter still show those to be the most popular channels for seeking new business in terms of social media. Any thoughts?

I was to attend a recent event in NYC that was to be the introduction of a new online community in the US. The company, similar to DaniWeb, has been around for 10 years. Unlike DaniWeb, they charge their community members a yearly fee. Because of a sudden death in my family I was unable to attend or have anyone else from my company attend in my place. I alerted the company and I knew that the lateness of my alerting them to my inability to attend would make it impossible for them to fill my spot. Although the event was free to attend, they did ask for a credit card to secure the spot and if you did not attend you would be charge a fee of $395. One would think that a sudden death would be an acceptable reason to not attend without penalty.

Unfortunately, one of their VPs involved in sales, sent me an e-mail informing me that while my families loss was unfortunate I would get charged a penalty. But, so that I would get something out of it they would make it a membership and at a discounted rate. I attempted to contact their US office and left a voice mail but I was never contacted. I have taken additional steps that I will not mention now but I am using social media as a way of contacting the CEO in regards to this.

Has this ever happened to you? If you were managing and growing an online community that you charged for would you assess penalty fees for unforseen events that were beyond the control of anyone?

As internet marketers, we need to measure the stickiness value and engagmenet level of visitors to a site. Thus, many companies have used Google Analytics in the past few years since it is FREE. But there were other companies who preferred to still use paid tools like WebTrends, Omniture, and Coremetrics to mention a few. Thus, I found it interested that on the Forrester blog it mentioned:

"The merits of free are compelling.Web analytics tools, 66% would consider displacing them with a free alternative. While the primary driver for this consideration is cost, 60% of enterprises are more likely to consider a free tool now because of recent improvements in free solutions. Additionally, 52% are enticed by free tools because they allow enterprises to invest more in the people necessary to drive insight rather than the technology used to collect and analyze data."

So what do you think? I personally liked Visual Science before it got gobbled by Omniture.

Additionally, there has been some talk about Twitter rolling out some new features like "geolocation API" and "Lists."

Personally, i think Twitter is a great tool for aggregating all the news, information, and people I am interested in following... BUT if you follow more than a few dozen "people," your main page can seem overwhelming and distracting. For this reason, I am excited to see the "Lists" feature. All too often I find myself wishing for a way to categorize my different feeds by topic. For example, have a group for sports tweets separate from a group from stock market tweets.

The new "geolocation API" will now allow users to follow tweets by location. This can prove to be a powerful way for local businesses to broadcast to a local audience.

What do you think of these new features and how well will they be received by individual twitter users and also business owners?

Are there any other features you would like to see on Twitter?

The importance about this blogger was that the visitors to his blog also visited other pages of Fox site and this is what content publisher sites really desire - to increase the stickiness value of site visitors. But guess what? When the blogger was dismissed, the bloggers visitors did not return to the site.

I love Twitter, and post a lot of links to security related stories via my @happygeek account. But now I am getting a little worried that I might suffer the same fate as a well known, and highly respected security expert. Mikko Hypponen is a familiar face around the security conventions, and a familiar name to anyone who reads security news blogs. Mikko is the Chief Research Officer at F-Secure, and knows a thing or two about issuing security warnings.

Shame that Twitter cannot say the same.

It all started back on August 3rd when Mikko posted a tweet which simply read:

Quote:

"I guess somebody will fall for it... a desperate MySpace phishing site at www. rnyspece. com (don't go there)."

The eagle-eyed amongst you will note that Mikko inserted spaces into the URL to prevent the hard of thinking from clicking on a link to a phishing site. You might even have spotted the words 'phishing site' and the phrase 'don't go there' which were part of the posting.

Twitter, it would seem, did not spot any of these things. Although it took the micro-blogging outfit a couple of months not to spot them and suspend the @mikkohypponen Twitter account. Yes, suspended the account of a well known Internet security expert for passing on a warning about an Internet security threat. Doh. Or, as Twitter called it, strange activity. The official Twitter response when Mikko tried to access his account was a warning which read "this account is currently suspended and is being investigated due to strange activity. If we have suspended your account mistakenly, please let us know."

Mikko did just that, and got the rather patronising response from Twitter customer services of "I've unsuspended you acct. You were suspended for using the malware URL rnyspeceDOTcom in DMs. Be careful! We scan evrythng for malware." Yes, those were the Twitter customer service spellings.

Nice to know that Twitter apparently considers itself to be the security expert here. You might recall that it has been at the centre of some slack security scares itself in the recent past, such as when an employee got hacked and confidential company documents became public record. Not that I am going to dwell on such things, the issue here is why Twitter suspended the mikkohypponen account, the manner in which it did it and the nature of that customer service response.

Maybe Twitter didn't realise that Mikko was a leading security expert, after all there are millions of users of the service. Well, he told ZDNet that he had "worked with Twitter previously regarding twitter worms and such" so you might think they would remember him.

OK, but Twitter restored the account once he complained loudly about it so no harm done. Well, apart from the fact that, initially at least, Twitter did not restore the thousands of followers that Mikko had nor the people he himself followed, not to mention his Tweet archive. That has now been rectified I am pleased to report.

The above shows something of an immature system for dealing with such issues, as indeed does the customer service response which was not only patronising but I think really rather rude as well. Is it that hard to say 'sorry, we got it wrong' apologies for the inconvenience' rather than 'you've been very naughty and you are lucky we are being so nice about it' or is it just me?

Look, I'm pleased to learn that Twitter takes security matters seriously. Especially the posting of malicious links which is a real problem for it, the bad guys can and do post links to bad places. Yet the nature of the suspension would suggest that this is some kind of automatic scanning system for content deemed inappropriate or links known to be malicious. In this case I would suggest it was looking for the word rnyspece as Mikko deliberately posted a malformed URL to prevent link clicking. Again, you might think that this is a good thing, but here are two reasons why it is not.

Firstly, how come it took two months to discover the link and suspend the account posting it? If that's the time-scale involved then Twitter might as well save some resources and pull the plug on that filtering. The phishing gangs do not hang around for months, they are generally fly-by-night types with sites up and down like a whore's drawers.

Secondly, what about the retweet situation? Twitter itself states, in a blog posting regarding Project Retweet which will bring official support to retweeting, that "The open exchange of information can have a positive global impact and the more efficient dissemination of information across the entire Twitter ecosystem is something we very much want to support." Well, it has a funny way of showing it. If you suspend someone for posting something inappropriate, what about anyone who retweets that posting? If the filtering system is, indeed, automated then rewteeters are surely also at risk of suspension.

http://www.relationship-economy.com/?p=6591
The basic premise is that in the world there are either creators or copiers and that is social media if you simply copy other peoples work you are destined to be a loser in social media. I agree with this as I strongly advocate to my clients that they have to share their knowledge and develop and speak with their own voices in the social media world otherwise they will be ignored. What do you think?

In a society that has become as litigious as ours, this was inevitable. If you read the link above you will find out that a woman has been charged with violating an order of protection for poking someone on Facebook. If found guilty, the woman could get a month in jail and a $2,500 fine. Based on the court order the logic behind the charge is solid but this is sad from the point of a view that we have become so sensitive that we will sue for anything at the drop of a hat. While I am on facebook I am not an expert but I thought that if you blocked someone they could not contact you. Am I wrong on this?

The link above this is to a report on Mashable that one day after 10,000+ hotmail accounts had their usernames and passwords posted on-line due to a phishing scheme, today the same problem has hit GMail, Yahoo, AOL, Earthlink and Comcast accounts bringing the total number of compromised accounts to over 30,000. Google has already taken steps to correct this by forcing password resets on all affected accounts. All are advised to check their accounts.
