Take the side of the case off and see if there is much dust around the heatsink.

Are you overclocking the cpu, or gpu? Is the heatsink clean of dust etc.?
Something is probably getting too hot by the sound of it.

What are your ambient temps? Make sure the heat sink is firmly attached to the IHS.

He's probably thinking of a Turion :).

What monitor are you using? If it's an LCD, try hooking up a CRT monitor to see if you can get in to see the settings.
