i would reinstall the NIC drivers on your desktop, update the firmware in your router, and re-run the network setup wizard. You'd be suprised what that can fix.

I've always found it impossible to file share accross a bridged connection. Something about not being able to fileshare accross Internet Conection Sharing going all the way back to win 9x.

In theory, yes, it can work. In practice, the WRE54Gv1-3 sucks for many reasons.

dell likes to sometimes install 1 HDD using a proprietary software RAID BIOS... this will confuse ghost. So, maybe new Motherboard = new BIOS settings.
