Hard drives can cause intermittent fails as well as Any electronic component. They have a circuit board responsible for operation. Ive froze them before and pulled data prior to them totally failing....

Could be a CPU socket w/bad solder joints from overheating.. (Prevelent on the Athlon models). Or leaky diodes on the supply rails to the CPU.

You can recover some w/spinrite if it will still spin up. This is generally a one time deal. Get your data and a new drive.

What size screen is this? Sounds like the vid circuit in the LCD is going to pot.. (Have seen this on various notebooks).. Check internal ribbon and connector cables first.
