As an update:
IE7 is running much better already. If there is no more spyware or such, I'm happy with it as is. If there is more to clean up, I'm ok with that also.

That error points to a corrupt registry hive. There are instructions at microsoft.com to try to fix it but my experience has always been a repair install using the XP cd that came with your computer....
