You probably won't be able to recover anything if the chip inside the drive was damaged, but there is a (very) slim chance you might be able to return the drive for a replacement.

Try downloading and installing the latest drivers and software for your DVD writer. Be sure to completely uninstall the old drivers.

You may want to do the same for the motherboard/IDE controller...
