Didnt think about this until later but the utility has to have some way of flagging the diagnostic to run before the operating system runs...

Hitachi's DFT (drive fitness test) is a good hard drive diagnostic which I use at work. It does an ok job of detecting bad sectors and failing drives but sometimes fails to read SMART...

I would pull the ram and see if you get post beeps to make sure its working. If the cpu was damaged the board (on occassion heh) will give beep codes idicating that also.

Were there recently any storms(lightning) or power outages in your area? I see this a lot with consumer class routers/modems. A power spike or brown out...

I dont know how much you deal with(id assume a lot) malware problems but typically(i say typically because thats most of what i see) LSP problems are related to malware or internet security...
