Yeah, as mentioned GIMP was developed for those without windows. It's a sub par version of photoshop.

Definitly, there are many types of artforms, it's not just about pen and paper. You need creativity, colour theory and other such qualities to be able to design professionaly.

The best programs to look into would be 3d studio max, bryce and cinema4d probably. :) Good luck, they take time learning, I advise buying a book from amazon first.
