What programs are causing this error exactly?

There is really no way unless you install the Genuine Advantage Tool.

Right click the file and go to the security tab.

You may need to click Advanced and then take ownership before you can modify the permissions.

But set them back so your user has FULL PERMISSIONS

Boot from a WIndowsXP CD.

Enter setup mode.

Go to Recovery Console.

Well.. so long as he leaves his First drive as primary he should not have to worry about anything.. if something looks to CD rom and drive ltter changes it will ask for cd and he cahnges drive...
