1. Have you checked your Power Options? It may be hibernating.

Without the drivers you should get basic vga graphics. Did you clear the CMOS jumper? Did the previous owner use a PCI-e card for graphics?

If you have access to another PC with cd burning capabilities download memtest86, burn to cd and run the test. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD first.
