Have a look at easy bcd (google it). Use it to reset your mbr to use the vista loader, and then once you have verified that your mbr is in tact (and on the correct partition!), you may delete/recover...

If you found the product key on the machine, then it's the product key for Vista, not Office. Yep, they need separate keys.

Your title is a bit of a strawman. You haven't justified your idea that Windows 7 wants to do away with the keyboard. Besides, you'd still need special hardware to use those features.

You mean the key is a home basic key? But how would you check for that in store?

The reason I ask is because I thought the Vista disk lets you install any version so long as you have the right key.

i do have a manual selection. the new mbr on my xp drive lets me choose between xp and vista.

I would be surprised if it DIDN'T work! So long as your key is, in fact, legit, it will install and activate. Remember Vista's protection scheme checks product keys, and not byte code.
