If you move the screen when this condition is happening does it change at all? This would indicate a bad connection.. If not you will have to change the LCD at most..

Contrast circuit peaking? Has to be a screen issue.. Is the video washed out or faded looking?

What size screen is this? Sounds like the vid circuit in the LCD is going to pot.. (Have seen this on various notebooks).. Check internal ribbon and connector cables first.

Looks almost like your ribbon is partially pulled from the LCD. (best case scenario) Worst? Video deciphering circuits ka-put.. Does this change with movement of the lid? Or a light tap?

Sounds like a shorting LCD inverter or a chaffed cable shorting to it..
