It's probably a faulty cd rom drive. That's just a guess as you have given very little information to work with.

Ok, can you describe what type of drives they are (ata or sata) and exactly how they are connected? Same with your hard drive(s).

I don't remember you saying they don't show up in the bios, that's a whole new ball game.
You need to check the data cable to see if it is loose at all. Same with the power cables.

It's just a possibility that Mbam may pick up something.

I agree about AVG, I used it for quite some time before finding out it was no longer all that effective.

It sound like drivers and software have been either disabled or corrupted. You need to go to the HP Compaq site and update all drivers and software.

Frank, has the drive been working properly before now? If so, I don't see how a jumper setting could be the cause of your problem.

Have a look in Manage to see if is assigned a drive letter.

To do this, right click on your "My Computer" then select "Manage" from the list. The select "Storage" then "Disk Management(local)"....

64 bit version of what? Both XP and Vista are available in 64bit versions.

The best thing to do is google for 64 bit drivers and get hardware that you can find drivers for.
