Hardware/software decoding should be in the settings menu of your DVD playback software (PowerDVD, Cinemagic etc...). It might even be an option called "Use hardware acceleration" or something along...

Well, for future reference, yes, theres absolutely no problem using an OEM code to re-install, even if you don't have the original disc. All went very smoothly.
