When you restart the pc, do the drives appear in the bios list?

Go to Start | Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit the Ok button. Insert your CD if/when requested.

Go to Start | Run and type in chkdsk /r and hit ok.
This will check for any errors and repair any found. It may take a while.

Do you have your XP OS CD?

Go in to the Device Manager and under disc drives and also DVD drives, locate the drives that are giving problems and double click on them.

That may, unfortunately, be the case.

Are your graphics drivers up-to-date? That would be my next move. See if you can boot into safe mode after updating.

Only thing I can suggest is to reset the bios by removing the cmos battery on the motherboard for a couple of minutes before re-fitting it. See if it works.
