it could be a problem with the DNS,

If you get "Timed Out" when trying the above as suggested by hughv, then try the below:

Start-->Run-->cmd
ping 66.249.93.147

Try Seeing if Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) will boot, then you can decide on Hardware / Firmware

How about, once the laptop has started, trying Start --> Log Off? Then logging on as administrator.
