i believe that formatting is the best solution in solving OS problems, it's not the only solution though. But I only take reformatting into consideratoin when everything else fails. just my 2c.

..Or, you can give Partition Magic a try. I think it can change NTFS to FAT32, im not very sure abt this though. but what i know is, you won't lose any of the Data you have in the HDD.

I once used an old yamaha CD-RW drive with Nero Burning ROM. It wont detect the CD-RW Drive. It only works on Adaptec's EZ cd creator. maybe you're having the same problem that i had years ago.
