Are you sure about 1-5 GIGA-bytes (not MEGA-bytes)? If so, that is a huge amount of data and FTP is probably a weak solution. Burning CD's is definitely preferred I think.

Yup. At the DOS prompt I can ping an IP address (216.238.39.99 for example - Google) but when I ping a domain name (www.google.com) it cannot find anything.

You probably have an add-on (like real.com) that is having trouble responding. Uninstall/reinstall of that program might help.

Check your screen color resolution first. Make sure it is set to at least 256 colors. If no success, I suggest you remove and reinstall your video driver.
