no luck, the hdd is very hot when i feel it, I have been using a different power plug ac adapter since i got the laptop

yeah im fine about the ram - its the overheating cd drive and floppy im worried about as it is causing everything else to heat up

It depends, I had an issue like this where my memory was slightly out and had dust in the slot - and it could be an overheating problem -- try getting a hold of another stick of ram and test it out...

plausibly all it takes is a vaccum cleaner or can of compressed air or shove a pipe cleaner between the fan blades

it sounds hard but open up the laptop and check that thre is no fan motor damage and no cables in the way--since the laptop is old make sure there is not bigass piece of dust trapped in it
