ubuntu is the way to go. but if you have windows on the old computer, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea lo leave it, but do what you want.

i really don't know why your mic isn't working, it couldn't be the drivers, maybe it's to close to the speakers? that's what happened to me once. and i don't know why skype doesn't work.

plug in the camera, ignore the add new hardware crap and install the software that came with the cam. restart but leave the camera on the same port.
if this doesn't work, check back.
