Yes this is a smiple way but when your data become too important, you may wish to use Ajax combined with your menu. This way you can make calls to your server which gives back the data requested.

Depends on your vesrion, I think from the 4.3 you already get GD, may be you can update your php or you should rebuild your php engine with GD.

You can assign the sendmail program or any other smtp program for sending email for php.
