I would backup any important informaton ASAP. That hard drive shouldn't be making scraping noises or any metal-to-metal sounds. I would keep a close eye out on that hard-drive.

Yeah. It's true. If you need to recovery that stuff then you will need to purchase some software. There are no freeware programs that I know about. Sorry.

You have some options. The faster you get to them the better. Run a google search for some File Recovery software. I don't know of any freeware ones.

I'd reinstall XP with a good clean disc. The installation might have gone through, but one of the files might of been corrupt.

It's probably spyware that refues to close. Run Ad-ware and remove some stuff from the startup to troubleshoot.
