You can have your desktop again by clicking new task in task manager and typing explorer in it and then clicking ok. Then you can backup your system and reinstall XP. Tell us if this doesn't work.

ntldr is the file that triggers the start of windows ... so its always needed to start windows .. you can just insert your windows xp cd in your cd rom and repair windows.

Scrubbing a disk means writing over each bit on the drive with new and usually random information. If you delete your files from the recycle bin even then it'll be possible to access that information...
