some times you can change an exe icon . it's not immpossible .

some programs can do it for you . for example " Resource Hacker " or " PE Explorer " is the name of witch program that can edit .exe...

i mean maybe it's not windows problem , it can be your internet connection problem . call with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) .

Try this :
Boot From Windows XP CD and then go to recovery mode by pressing "R" when asked you .

in recovery mode type these commands :

1 . fixboot
2 . fixmbr

and still if you like use putty in ubuntu do this :

Applications > Add/Remove
wait it to be open and then at the search type :
putty
then wait for a second ,
now you can choose PuTTY SSH...
