Have you tried multiple keyboard layout and protocol settings before connecting?

It would help if you could make sure the configure files etc are all there.
cd same 3.something and from there go through the 'obvious' dirs with ls -all and read :)

Are you sure you have the rights to connect to that port on your system?
Check with netstat if it is open/listening :)
