It could be. Often, when ink jet cartridges just sit the ink dries out. It's much easier to replace the cartridge than to try to clean it/mess with it. (Especially if you know the printer works.)...

I wonder if that's the monitor's way of protecting it from bad resolutions. If you try to run a monitor at a resolution it doesn't support, you can damage it.
