There shouldn't be any problem installing windows 98 on a pentium 4 PC. not unless you've tried and have encountered problems, in that case, you'll need to elaborate more on the problem encountered.

It's most probably wear and tear. In my past experiences, spywares just screw up windows and not the hardware.

If you're installing XP, might as well boot from the CD and format the whole thing... there's an option that asks you to format the HDD giving you less work to be done...

True, fdisk is for managing your HDDs partitions. A quick format should wipe out your HDD, but then again, I don't think you can do it from within windows if the drive you're formatting is the drive...

Deltree.exe is always my ultimate deleting tool... it has never failed me yet... why don't you give it a try...

Try and get the most updated modem driver from Compaq. I think they have it in their site somewhere.

I think you can do that... but i'm not 100% sure since i don't do upgrades, it's either i stick wit what i have or have a clean install...
