in my cpanel i have counter called "add to favorite" , and i can't understand how does this counter work , cause after someone bookmark a website or added to my favorites does the browser sends data...

i want to know how alexa gets its ranking , all i know that it takes hits from people using alexa toolbar .... but is that all ? is there a genius mathematical equation they use ? some sample ratios...
