Then you should be able to just plug the machine into the router with a CAT5 or CAT6 cable, then plug the router into the modem, and transmit that way.

Ubuntu is good for plug and play, it has a lot of commercial and open source applications in the repos.

I don't like Microsoft products in general. I'm not an anti-Windows/Microsoft person, I just prefer UNIX/Linux/Mac (oddly, yeah, Mac) tools better.

Open a terminal, go to your desktop and type
chmod 775 GoogleEarthLinux.bin
./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

Yeah, but what more can you do besides basic graphical Windows applications? It doesn't even make a native EXE. You need to install the .NET Framework for VB.NET.

I think it's because you have "bind" in there twice.

Try /usr/sbin/named -u bind -g -c /etc/namedb/named-lan.conf

You seem to be using GNOME, correct?

GNOME sometimes screws up when running KDE applications, such as KDevelop.
