they can be had for 10 to 30$us,,

they can test the MOBO but i think you have to have it populated w/ CPU and ram to get them to function...

if you do attempt to update the BIOS again... besure to have the laptop connected to the AC power,, and make sure the battery is at full charge before starting....

when trying to power up w/ ram removed did the PC give any POST BEEPS at all?

i would try removing all cards from the PC (except video),, and unhooking all floppy/hdd...

not trying to hijack somone else's answer,,, but i think having any power source connected while doing the CMOS batt drain would defeat the purpose of draing the the CMOS...

i would remove AC,,...

first step,,, turn off machine,,
pull all cards out of machine (except video),,
unhook all floppy/hdd cables...

now reboot machine and see if you can get into BIOS settings

i assume that you have proper ventilation around the pc ??? try raising the laptop up by placing something under each side of the PC this will help with getting more air flow under and thru the...

i doubt the BIOS update will fix your problem, but it's worth a shot... i'd also check the current BIOS setting before updating... pay attention to any USB Setting in the bios.
