Most large chains have an agreement with MS to only stock Vista now. However I know that most small independants are still stocking it or you could always try eBuyer?

Could just be a high level of fragmentation, i.e your drive is heavily fragmented, System Mechanic will usually resolve this for you.

Are you using SM6 or SM7? Depending on the size of your drive...

your RAM should be fine for what you're doing, I'd have no concerns about you keeping your RAM at 512MB unless you're running demanding programs such as SAGE or a Graphic design...
