You can get it to connect to workgroups, just not domains. Are you able to actually logon to the machine?

What folder is it? Try logging in as a different user(one with admin rights) and try copying it then.

Try dumbing down the graphics. Go to a 16 bit desktop scheme instead of 32. Turn off all the flashy effects(transparent menus, shadows under icons, etc)

Do you know what the name of the virus was? This will help in determining how to get go about getting rid of it.

Microsofts site claims it the error 4 could be caused by a hardware issue. Incompatible or damaged maybe.

Perhaps the disk isn't bootable.
