First off, check to see if you in fact do have permission to open /dev/mixer. Are you root? Do you have administrative privileges?

Well. Go into a terminal and post the output of:
top -n 1 -b

(Use code tags for the output, please)

You might have a runaway process that's using 99% of your memory.

When I plug my wireless mouse, iPod, tablet, guitar processor, etc. into my laptop, they WORK, but they don't show up in lsusb. I just get a blank output.

Anyone have any idea as how to fix this?

Well, there should be something like System > Preferences > Sound or something. I'm on Ubuntu, so I can't help you.

If you're new to Linux, I don't suggest Slackware.

It's not impossible, but pretty difficult when your notebook blatently says "MAX 3GB RAM MEMORY".

sudo apt-get remove alsa-base
sudo apt-get install alsa-base

Open Synaptics and reinstall it that way. (Much easier, IMO)

I'm just not used to things are above, say, like 4-8GB, seeing as I'm living in a desktop-computer environment, where computers cap at 3GB even.

Well, i'm not that familiar with Fedora Core, personally, but maybe try reinstall alsa-base.
