Hi DMR, I have the same problem as trevari. A couple of days ago while on the internet, a program called Pest Trap downloaded itself onto my computer. I researched it and found it was related to SpywareNo and Spysheriff. My desktop background turned solid blue and I can't change it back. I removed the Pest Trap program, and scanned my computer with spyware doctor, ad-aware, and spybot s&d to no avail. I tried that smitfaud link you gave but I got a message saying that I it wouldn't let me merge it with the registry. I downloaded hijack this from your post and got this log. I'm running XP and I disabled system restore. Thanks for your time.

Hi trevari, welcome to DaniWeb :)

1. I've moved your thread to the appropriate forum.

2. The problem you describe is a symptom of the SpySheriff/Smitfraud group of infections; here's the specific fix for regaining full functionality of your desktop properties:

Download the smitfraud.reg file by right-clicking on this link and choosing "Save link as..." or "Save target as..." from the resulting pop-up menu. Save the file to your desktop.

- Double-click the smitfraud.reg file you saved, and when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

- Reboot your computer; your display properties should be returned to normal.

3. As the others have suggested, post a HijackThis log for us to review:

Download the (free) HijackThis utility:

http://www.stevewolfonline.com/Downloads/DMR/Spyware%20Tools/HJT/HijackThis.exe

Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Create a folder for HJT outside of any Temp/Temporary folders and move/extract HijackThis to that folder now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...".
Save the log in the folder you created for HijackThis; the saved file will be named "hijackthis.log". Open the log file with Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the Notepad file here.

The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

...but I got a message saying that I it wouldn't let me merge it with the registry.

Did the message give you any indication as to why the Registry merge was being denied? The reason I ask is that some anti-spyware programs like SpyBot, Ad Aware, etc. have protection features which can block other programs from making Registry changes.
I see no signs of malicious infections in your HijackThis log, so my first thought would be that this is the case. If that's true, you need to temporarilly disable the feature that is blocking the smitfraud.reg utility. Ad Aware's feature is called "Ad Watch", SpyBot calls theirs "Tea Timer", and although I'm sure Spyware Doctor has something similar, I don't know what it's called.

DMR, sorry about that again, hopefully this time it will post correctly. It seems my problem has been taken care of. I checked out my ad-aware and spybot programs and I don't think those protection features were running since I was only using the free versions. I kept trying the smitfraud.reg file but it wouldn't allow the merge. So I went to the display function and noticed that it wasn't locked anymore, but it still wouldn't turn the background back to normal. When I rebooted however, it was back to normal. I'm guessing it had something to do with turning off the system restore which I did yesterady, and of course deleting the infected files. Thank you very much for the help.

I'm not quite sure what was going on there, but I'm glad you finally got things back to normal. :)
