Problems with Downloader.Mislead.App and SpywareBot

Dec 12th, 2007
Hi. I first posted this in the Windows XP Forum, mistakenly.

7 days ago, we started getting redirected to arbitrary websites, our 'Windows XP Home' computer (with 6 separate profiles) suddenly got very slow, and we crashed alot. Norton Systemworks 2007 did not stop initially whatever hit us and could not remove it, but notified us of the presence of Trojan.Vundo and Downloader.Mislead.App security breaches all the time. Norton's Tech support wanted $100 to 'help'. I said no thanks. But after updating everything (Windows, Norton) and downloading and running Windows Defender, AVG Anit-Spyware v7.5, ATF-Cleaner, HijackThis, Kapersky Online Virus Scanner, and SpyBot SD, we still had Norton notifications of breaches and we still had website redirections. AND SO, I downloaded, paid for, and ran SpywareBot, which I did only because their free 'search' was the only one over two days that claimed to find Trojan.Vundo and Downloader.Mislead.App on our computer. I'm not sure any of this has really fixed things, but today Norton has found Trojan.Vundo ONLY A FEW TIMES.

My co-worker, a member, told me SpywareBot was bads news and suggested we were not out of the woods.

Below, I have attached our latest HijackThis Logfile for your consideration.

Please Help.

ps: I have 'fixed problems' with various software listed above, even when I was presented with scary-sounding warnings about how severe the consequences could be.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb .

Two pieces of free advice; Norton is rubbish and most "paid for" anti-malware tools are not worth the money!

==

You still have trash from Vundo present, so if you can, get a refund for Spywarebot.

==

Hi. First of all you need to update hijackthis to version 2.0.2.

==
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Thanks for the welcome. I took your suggestion and have attached a recent hijackthis log plus two combofix logs. There are two of the latter because after running the first, I realized my son had programs open in his profile, so I ran the second after shutting him down.

Anyway, I appreciate your time and thoughts.

Instead of norton and sbywarebot, what do you recommend for protection?

If you want a 'paid' for AV, I would suggest Kaspersky or NOD32. Free AV's such as Avast, AVG are excellent too. I use Avast and have had no problems for a year. I also do not use Internet Explorer.
AVG antispyware would be a better solution than spywarebot too.

==

Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

C:\Documents and Settings\ann\yupdctr.exe

====

A. Please RUN HijackThis
  1. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  2. Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ED628BA-3675-4E34-A898-4FEC5F37A624} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfe.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [6c153f40] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmgahgor.dll",b
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-4031795748-2186782157-3087635380-1009\..\Run: [DDC] C:\DOCUME~1\cooper\LOCALS~1\Temp\vwoiydhg.exe (User 'cooper')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-4031795748-2186782157-3087635380-1009\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfe.dll,c (User 'cooper')
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-4031795748-2186782157-3087635380-1009\..\Run: [6c153f40] rundll32.exe "C:\DOCUME~1\cooper\LOCALS~1\Temp\daiiwjmi.dll",b (User 'cooper')

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: wincqt32 - wincqt32.dll (file missing)

  3. Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfe.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmgahgor.dll
C:\DOCUME~1\cooper\LOCALS~1\Temp\vwoiydhg.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\cooper\LOCALS~1\Temp\daiiwjmi.dll
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y15...1/CFScript.gif

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix then post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hi.

Jotti's found nothing (status OK) on the file you recommended I scan, but I did not see a way to produce a report to attach. I copy / pasted the webpage instead and attached it as a .DOC. Hopefully this is safe and complete enough for you (and me).

I also am not sure I properly did what you asked for your HJT and ComboFix requests. Most of the files you asked me to check did not exist on the latest HJT scan. Only "020 - Winlog Notify . . . " was there, so I removed it.

With respect to ComboFix, there was no "Start" or "Run" buttons in Notepad. I simply copy / pasted your codebox contents onto a blank Notepad page and saved it as CFScript.txt. From there, I following your directions.

Both reports / logs are posted, plus the Jotti's page.

Two follow-up questions:
1. What is the best way to remove SpywareBot, assuming that uninstall wouldn't be complete?
2. What's browser do you recommend? Is it because Internet Explorer is inherently unsecure?

Thanks.

File appears to be ok . I know there is no "Start, Run" in Notepad, it was directions on how to open notepad .
Spywarebot should be able to be uninstalled from add/remove. Once done, run hijackthis and delete any entries referencing it.
I recommend the opera browser and have used it almost exclusively for about four years. IE is the target of the majority of malware and as such, should be avoided imo.

==

Logs look ok. How is the pc now?

No worries .

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.
  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

===============

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Thanks, I was thinking about asking you what you recommended for best hygiene. I'll be taking your suggestions.

One last thing (that I originally thought was unrelated). I posted a query a few days back on the Windows XP Forum entitled "Rundll Problems" and I now I am not so sure it's unrelated to all the clean-up I've been doing. The responses I gotten have yet to help (note: I haven't followed-through on the last one because I'm worried it's beyond me).

What's the chance you could have a look and let me know if it's just unfinished clean-up business? Or, is there a way I can make it easier for you by linking that thread to this one?

Thanks again.

We will have a look with the following;

Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. Right click on the download link and select Save Target As. Save it to the desktop or to a folder in a permanent directory. It generates a log which will be created in the same folder you are running it from. Please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.
