Hi, i think you might have already sorted the inicial problem already of the black screen when starting vista, but i thought just to leave here the possible solution.

Just to make sure is the same problem we talking about i had a problem of when ever i start my vista it would open totally blank so i had to run the explorer.exe, if so this the possible solution.

1. Click the start menu and type
'regedit' and hit "Enter".

2. Naviaget to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

3. Click on "Winlogon" then locate the shell string in the right pane.

4. Double click it and replace the value with:

explorer.exe

5. Click Ok and exit regedit,

6. Reboot and you should be ok

anyway, how long do you wait on the black screen? since your windows was a bit messed up, it might take several minutes to load it...had it happen to me several times before...

You can run commands like regedit through task manager. It has access to a run prompt under the main menu.

Sorry for the late reply, but you can get to regedit by pressing the combination keys of windows key and the letter R

or by doing file -> run under task manager...
