Hi I know you guys are really good at helping people get rid of viruses through an easy step by step process. In fact this inst the first time i have had to ask you guys for help. I have a really annoying viruses right now it is a red circle with a white x in my task bar that is labeled security alert. I get tons of unneeded and unwanted pop ups. What operating system is your computer running, and what anti virus software are you running? What happens when you right click on the cross? Have you run your anti virus software today - i.e. scanned for malicious ware or viruses?

hi rose

i am using windows xp. I have the norton internet security which came with it and also AVG which i downloaded when i first got my computer. the red circle with the white x is in my taskbar next to the clock almost all the time when i try to right click on it nothing happens but a yellow bubble does pop up from it sometimes that says secruirty alert. when i try to do ctr alt delete a window pops up saying that the task manager has been disabled by the administrator.

there is also another medium sized window that pops up and say spyware alert. it contiues to say that "worm.32.net sky has been detected on your machine. the cirus is distributed via the internet and active x objects. the worm has its own smtp engine which means it gathers e-mails from your local computer and re distributes itself In the worst case it can allow attackers to access your computer stealing passwprds and personal data. the process should be removed from your system" and the it asks me yes or no to remove it but i have just been saying no. i found this other thing online which i am currently running called the symantec W32.Netsky fixtool 1.12.0. should I let that keep running?

Alright, I'll see what I can do for you.

First and foremost, pick either AVG or Norton (which edition of Norton is it? 2007 or later? Or earlier?) Uninstall the other. The two anti-virus programs are likely conflicting and neither is likely working correctly. I highly recommend keeping AVG. To be safe, I also recommend reinstalling AVG so that any damage it may have received from Norton (and perhaps the virus in question) may be fixed.

Fully update and run a full scan with whatever you chose to keep.

Next, download HijackThis http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-...-10227353.html run a scan and post the log here.

In the interim, while you're waiting for a diagnosis from the community, you can take the shotgun approach to getting rid of this virus. Try running several free online scans. Here's the ones I know about:

CA Virus Scan: http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor...info/scan.aspx

CA Malware Scan: http://www.ca.com/us/securityadvisor/pestscan/

Trend Micro HouseCall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Microsoft Live OneCare Safety Scanner http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

BitDefender Free Online Scanner http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

McAfee FreeScan http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?affid=294

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

Symantec Security Check http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym

Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasecurity.com/usa/

---Under this line does not remove, only finds, threats---

Webroot Antispyware Scan: http://www.webroot.com/En_US/land-sp...-freescan.html

Kaspersky Free Virus Scan http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner (I get a lot of false positives with this scan)

Prevex free scan: http://info.prevx.com/downloadcsi.asp

*note* I had to reconstruct this list as I had some problems with the notepad file that contained it. Tell me if there are any bad/broken links!

Also, if you have the time, you can set up an Ultimate Boot CD (www.ubcd4win.com). The website has very straightforward instructions. I recommend doing this on another computer.

Additionally, try downloading and updating A-squared free http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ and/or avg antispyware free.grisoft.com. While you're there, you can also try AVG antirootkit, just for kicks.

Once you're fully updated on all your antispyware/antivirus, boot into safemode and run full scans. This is your best option short of the UBCD.

Try some of these, if not all, and post back with that HijackThis log ASAP!

Good luck!
