I started having problems accessing my history folder in IE about 2 weeks ago. I read a previous post from someone with the same problem, and someone told them to download Hijackthis, run it, and post the log file in the 'secure' area on this site?? The word 'Secure' was highlighted, but when I clicked on it, it took me to an add for ATT phone service??? Not sure where this 'secure' area is in here, I've searched for it to no avail. I am pasteing my Hijackthis logfile in this message, if I need to post it elsewhere, please tell me where!!

Hello, suzanne, posting a log here like that is just fine.
Lessee.. you have AVG Free and Symantec AV services running; you must remove one, and now. They may interfere badly with unforseeable results. If you wish to remove Symantec you may require the removal tool from their website.
Good. Now start hijackthis, select Scan Only, place checkmarks against all the entries listed below that still exist, and then press Fix Checked.

History.. open an IE window, go Tools, Internet options, General tab and see if a useful Days to keep number is set. Yes? Then navigate to the History folder for your IE under C:\DOCUME~1\Your Profile\LOCALS~1\History\History.IE5

Thank you for your help. I first tried to use a Symantec uninstaller, because I want to keep AVG, but every uninstaller I downloaded was a .sit file, which I could not open. After trying every version I could find (practically) and not being able to use them, I did the Hijackthis that you suggested. I then checked the days to keep number, and went to the history folder, but both the 'today' and the 'last week' folders are still showing up as empty. Both are still not opening when I click on 'history' on my IE toolbar, either.

What can I do to uninstall the Symantec? Is there a download I can use, or, what can I do with the .sit file to use it? Thanks for any help you can provide!

First of all you need to download the newer HiJackThis, you can get it at filehippo.com. Do you still have symantec in your programs menu? if you do go to the uninstaller and see what that does if that says that it cant uninstall because its not valid or doesnt exist then download CCleaner from the link in my signature and run the scan on that and the registry scan and post a new HiJackThis log up here

and check in control panel - add/remove programs and see if symantec is on there
