I installed Freebirth, but whenever I try to run it from a terminal I get the error:

alex@alex-laptop:~$ freebirth
Unable to open audio device.
alex@alex-laptop:~$

How can I get this to work?

The error is probably due to a) your soundcard not being recognized, or b) your soundcard does not support sound mixing and another program is using your sound card.
